Mori J Von pays Tribute to Professor Rex Nettleford


The Mori J von Comedy show will be honouring Professor Rex Nettleford, from the University of the West Indies who died hours before his 77th birthday on the 2nd February 2010.

A moment of silence would be asked for tonight at the show to honour Professor Rex Nettleford

According to Ron Morrison, Rex Nettleford was celebrated in the Caribbean and further a field for his various talents and he will be best remembered for his intellectual contributions, “while helping us understanding ourselves as creative people.”

He added Rex Nettleford founded the Jamaican dance company almost 50 years ago and up until his death was a choreographer.

“He is a irreplaceable icon in Caribbean theater and performing art.” Morrison said.

Morrison revealed that he was inspired by a quote made by Rex Nettleford in which he said “the power to create a innovative remains the greatest guarantee of respect and recognition.”

Morrison said that the Junior Calypso Champion Tennesia De Fretas will be performing tonight at the Held over show. While she will eventually branch off into theater with the Mori J Von comedies jam, since the show provides a platform for new talent country wide.

As a lasting tribute to the life and work of the late Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, Professor the Honourable Rex Nettleford, the University of the West Indies has announced its intention to establish ‘The Rex Nettleford Foundation for Caribbean Cultural and Social Studies’. The objective of the Foundation is to create an Endowment Fund, the proceeds of which will be used to support the research of exceptional postgraduate students and fellows in areas reflecting the breadth of Professor Nettleford’s own contributions to Caribbean development, whether in the arts, history, politics or culture of the Caribbean region.
