BOOTY SLAPPING FOLKS : It Can Cost You Just Ask Dennis Rodman...!!!

Some booties just aren't worth slapping. That's the lesson we hope Dennis Rodman has learned after a federal judge ordered him to pay $225,000 dollars to a waitress he's accused of "grabbing and humiliating" back in March 2006.

Lawyers for 28-year-old Sara Ure says Rodman never responded to the civil lawsuit filed against him in November 2007 but his record of disrespect towards women speaks for itself. "Defendant Rodman injured and humiliated Ms. Ure at her place of employment, which is simply one of the latest incidents in an almost decade-long practice of violence and blatant disregard for the safety of others,'' attorneys Kathleen England and Jocelyn Cortez said in their April 21st motion for a default judgment.

Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Jones ordered Rodman pay Ms. Ure nearly a quarter million dollars for his booty slap.

Ure, a former Hard Rock Casino employee, accused Rodman of grabbing her and forcing her to dance, holding her against her will and slapping her butt in front of coworkers and other customers.

Question Of The day:...... Is Tapac Dead Or Alive...???...... Well The Plot Thickens.

We just got new pictures of a guy (left) people think is the same guy we plastered all over our site yesterday -- a guy we think could actually be Tupac Shakur. People from all over the world went nuts yesterday after we posted the pics (right). Frankly, we don't think the new guy is the same as the one we put up yesterday -- we still think yesterday's dude -- who was in a bar in New Orleans over the weekend -- is 2pac.

However you be the judge and tell us what ya'll think.

Is Tupac dead or alive ?

Paris Hilton not worried about the swine flu: “I don’t eat that”

Paris Hilton was asked by a paparazzo yesterday if she’d heard of the swine flu and she shook her head “no” and continued to play with her Blackberry. When the photographer explained that “it’s a new flu that’s killing a lot of people in Mexico and everything,” and asked if she was concerned she said “I don’t eat that.”

The swine flu is of course spread from person to person and cannot be caught from eating pork. You wouldn’t expect Paris to know that, since she’s completely oblivious to the biggest story in the news. She must not even glance at the headlines on the papers.

I’m all for public awareness of a possible pandemic, but the swine flu coverage is over the top and it’s unnecessarily scaring the people who do pay attention. From most reports in the US, it’s responding well to antivirals and is easily treated if it’s caught soon enough. No one in the US has died from the swine flu that we know of, which can be deadly but usually only causes mild symptoms. (Update: a 23 month-old baby in Texas has died from the virus.) The government seems to have a solid plan for containing the flu and making sure there are enough drugs available to treat it. (I agree with this editorial in the LA Times that we should take sensible measures, focus on containment without penalizing immigrants and help the Mexican government as much as possible.)

Stewart quipped that swine flu ranks last on the list of things that can kill you in Mexico, with “Bullet Flu” at the top of the list. They showed a clip from CNN in which they turned the entire country of Canada red on a big map for “6 mild cases” of the flu. Stewart said “I like a good scare as much as the next guy, but for six mild cases of the flu you’re going to turn four million square miles bright red?… What does a herpes outbreak look like out there? Blood coming out of your eyes?” Maybe Paris is right not to be too concerned. She’s doing fine Hint! Hint ! read the papers listen to the news Paris...

One would wanna ask is Paris that dumb or is she tryna pull a publicity stunt...

Cops' gonna be giving back Rihanna over a million in jewellery

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Los Angeles police have agreed to return the $1.4 million worth of jewelry that pop star Rihanna was wearing the night her R&B singer boyfriend Chris Brown is accused of assaulting her, Rihanna's lawyer said on Wednesday.

The earring and three rings that Rihanna was wearing were on loan to the "Umbrella" singer, who had attended a pre-Grammy party with Brown hours before the Feb 8 incident. They were taken by police as evidence in the case.

The designers asked for the bling to be returned and lawyer Donald Etra told a Los Angeles judge at a hearing on the assault case that police will first photograph them before handing them back.

Brown is charged with attacking Rihanna in their rented car on their way home from the party. He was not in court on Wednesday. He is free on bail pending a possible trial next month when he could be given probation or up to five years prison if convicted.

DISRESPECTFUL !?!?..... RIHANNA'S DAD SAYS CHRIS BROWN IS OLD NEWS … MY DAUGHTER DOESN'T WANT TO BE THE NEXT WHITNEY HOUSTON …

It looks like Chris and Rihanna may FINALLY be over … at least according to Rihanna’s father. Ronald Fenty spoke to US Magazine and said the following:

Chris sounds like old news to me. [Rihanna’s] a different person, back to herself. It’s like Chris never [even] existed. She seems reborn.

Indeed a second source says Rihanna is in a really good place. “She’s realizing how precious life is … she could lose it all if she’s not smarter. She’s starting to see that one wrong choice about who she loves could turn her into the next Whitney Houston.”

We’re happy for Rih … But why Whitney gotta be brought into this ain't that a bit disrespectful...

The Colin Mack rape PI continues...VC took stand again.

The virtual complainant (VC) in the Colin Mack rape case was on the stand again yesterday when the preliminary inquiry (PI) continued before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robert-son at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Though Mack’s attorney Glen Hanoman argued quite forcefully for bail for his client, his arguments were not convincing enough. Mack was further remanded and will return to court on April 30.

The PI into the rape charge against the promoter started on April 17 at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court with the 19-year-old (VC) and another witness taking the stand.

When Mack made his initial appearance at the Magistrate’s Court on April 15, he was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape, which stated that on April 12, he had sexual intercourse with a 19-year-old girl without her consent.

They Say: Eminem & Weezy To Collaborate

Unlike the reports that Em was dodging Weezy, the two are actually fans of each other’s lyrical prowess.

Eminem’s a popular guy in hip-hop circles nowadays, with Rick Ross calling on Slim Shady to collaborate — or battle! — with him, and there’s been Lil Wayne’s constant request to work with the Detroit lyricist. Weezy has even said Eminem has been dodging him.

But when asked whether he’d work with Wayne by Shade 45’s Angela Yee on “The Morning After” Sirius satellite radio show on Thursday, Em said, “I would. There hasn’t really necessarily been a time for me to go to collaborate and sh– lately, because I been so locked down in the studio. But I’m open for whatever. There’s a lot of rappers in the game I respect, especially right now.”

Em went on to again cite Lil Wayne and T.I., as he did in his recent XXL magazine cover story, as rappers he respects. He also named Kanye West, saying he “likes [Kanye] a lot” as an artist.

The hip hop version of Ebony and Ivory sounds like a winner to us.

Guyana is getting its share of pirates!

Police have arrested a man who is believed to have been involved in high seas piracy on fishermen in the Corentyne River on Monday night in which Yamaha outboard engines, gasoline and other items were stolen.

Chairman of the Number 66 Fish Port Complex, Pravinchandra Deodat told Stabroek News that he believed that four boats were robbed that night. He is pleased that the complex is having full co-operation from the police.

Three of the boats, he said, belong to members of his complex but only one of those has been accounted for so far. Deodat was part of a team that went out in search of the other boats up to late yesterday afternoon but they came back empty-handed.

Police sources told this newspaper that the other robbery took place two miles away from the shores of Number 43 Village around 6.45 pm.

Reports are that the pirates, armed with a handgun and a piece of wood, pulled up alongside the boat with the captain and two crew members and discharged a round.

They then ordered the men to hand over the engine, while hitting one of them on his back with the wood in the process. They also escaped with a large battery, three drums of mixed oil and a Motorola cellular phone.

The captain and crew were left to drift until they finally made it safely to shore and reported the matter. The owner of another boat who did not wish to be named told Stabroek News last evening that the pirates attacked his captain and three crew members around 10 pm on Monday. He said he only learnt of the incident around 2 pm yesterday after his crew came in to shore.

He said the pirates beat his workers and stripped his boat of the engine, a gas bottle, gasoline, a stove and a quantity of grocery. His crew was left to drift and it was not until they were close to the complex that another boat assisted in pulling them in.

One of the crew members, Ajai who was wet and in pain from the beating told this newspaper last evening that the pirates demanded that they place the engine in their boat. After that they ordered them to lie face down and “if we raise we head was more lash fuh we…”

Reports are that the workers noticed two other engines in the pirates’boat, suggesting that the two other boats had already been hijacked.Meanwhile Deodat who is also the chairman of the Anti-Piracy Committee appealed to persons to come forward with information they may have with regards to piracy so more arrests can be made.

He promised that a monetary reward would be given and that the information would be treated in strict confidence. The chairman said it is suspected that persons from the Corentyne area are carrying out the acts and said they need support from the general public to bring the situation under control.Piracy has plagued Corentyne fishermen in recent years.

Child actor from the movie "Slumdog..." is apparently being sold by her dad.

Being part of an Oscar winning movie can up your asking price in Hollywood. Apparently it can also up your asking price should your father decide to try and sell you.

Rubina Ali, the nine-year-old girl who was featured prominently in the Oscar winning "Slumdog Millionaire," was offered up for sale by her father to undercover reporters working for News of the World, the paper is reporting.

The young child star's asking price was roughly $295,000. According to the paper, the price started off much lower when he first began negotiating the deal. Maybe the father forgot to take DVD sales into account.

Apparently the dad is denying everything and told BBC that the whole thing is a "dirty" operation by the news of the world lol.

Preliminary Inquiry into the Colin Mack Rape charge has started.

A Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the rape charge against promoter Colin Mack started yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court with the 19-year-old virtual complainant (VC) and another witness taking the stand.

The PI is being conducted by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, who will determine at its conclusion whether a prima facie case has been made out against Mack at which stage the indictable charge will either be sent to the High Court for trial or thrown out.

Mack’s lawyer Glenn Hanoman told Stabroek News that he had applied for bail for his client at the High Court on Wednesday, but it was denied since the PI was scheduled to start yesterday. He said the grounds for the bail application were that his client might have a lengthy trial and it would be unfair to keep him incarcerated for that length of time.

He again applied for bail for Mack at 3 pm at the magistrate’s court stating that if it were to be granted the cashier at the court would close operations at 3.30 pm. The magistrate then informed him that the cashier had closed at 2:30 pm. Hanoman argued again that his client would likely not have a speedy trial.

However, the magistrate refused the bail application and ordered that Mack be remanded to prison and that he return to court on Monday when the PI would continue.

When Mack appeared at the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday he was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape, which stated that on April 12, he had sexual intercourse with a 19-year-old girl without her consent.

US Gays Boycott Jamaican Rums and Beers because of Jamaica's Opression of Gays!

GAYS and lesbians in the US have targeted Jamaican products Red Stripe beer and Myers Rum in a boycott of the Caribbean island to support local homosexuals who they said were being oppressed.

On Tuesday, gay advocates at a New York City inn - the self-styled birthplace of the gay rights movement - dumped the Jamaican liquor products in the sewer and called for continued support to send "a clear message to Jamaican people and their government".

In a statement yesterday Red Stripe, which is owned by the international Diageo Group, displayed surprise at being targeted. "Over the years, by our actions and our policies, we have demonstrated that we do not advocate any bias or prejudice against any individual or group(s)," said the statement.

"We have not had any consultation with this lobby group, but we do not rule out engaging them in discussions," Red Stripe said.

According to the group, through their website boycottjamaica, international human rights activists have labelled Jamaica "the most homophobic place on Earth" because homosexuals were being beaten and murdered on the island, while authorities do little to stop the violence.
As a reZsult, the US group said they were calling for a boycott of the island's products, including tourism.Said the organisers of the boycott: "We, as the owners of the Stonewall Inn, birthplace of the gay rights movement, refuse to support, in any way, shape or form, the oppression of any people especially our gay brothers and sisters in Jamaica.

"We ask all people of all walks of life to send a clear message to the Jamaican people and their government, that as long as they continue to allow and condone violence and hatred toward the gay community, we will neither buy their products nor support their tourist trade.

However, Jamaican homosexual group Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, and Gays (J-Flag) in a release posted on the Internet disapproved of the position taken by their counterparts in the US.
"It is important that our international allies understand the nature of our struggle and engage us in a respectful way about it," J-Flag said, adding that it required the painstaking effort of confronting the society and talking to social actors who can bring change in the way society sees homosexuals.

"We have been doing this through a small but growing group of increasingly aware opinion leaders who are concerned about the damage homophobia does to our society."

CHINA names its FIRST BLACK Olympic Athlete!

Ding Hui, a 19-year-old volleyball player, has become the first Black athlete to be asked to play for China in the Olympics, reports London’s Daily Telegraph newspaper. The athlete was named as one of 18 men on the national team’s training squad and would make his Olympic debut in London’s 2012 games.

Hui, warmly nicknamed Xiao Hei or “Little Black” by teammates, was born in China to a South African father and a Chinese mother. Although his selection is making headlines, Ding would rather people focus on his athletic abilities.

“People seem to care more about my heritage and appearance, but all I want to do is to play good volleyball,” he told a local newspaper.

Another member of the volleyball team also expressed frustration at the media attention.

“I had hoped the press would not dig out the boy’s African heritage or his family details, but instead focus on his skills and performance,” said team captain Li Shiping.

China has a small Black population, but the demographic is steadily growing due to new African immigrants. In fact, in Guangzhou, a city referred to as “Chocolate City” by the Chinese, there are an estimated 100,000 African immigrants, mostly from the western part of the continent, reports the Telegraph. The number is increasing by at least 30 percent each year in that area.

Some would argue the nation has a long way to go in terms of racial justice, though. Shortly before last year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, police held many Blacks in custody because they were believed to be drug dealers, the paper reports.

WOW Colin Mack remanded to JAIL on RAPE CHARGE!

A 38-year-old entertainment promoter, who allegedly raped a 19-year-old girl after offering her a ride home, was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate's Court.

Colin Mack of North Ruimveldt was not required to plead to the indictable charge of rape.

He was represented by attorneys-at-law James Bond and Glenn Hanoman.

It is alleged that Mack had sexual intercourse with the 19-year-old without her consent on April 12, at his home.

According to the police, Mack met the teenager at a nightclub and after a few drinks he offered to take her home.

The teen accepted the offer but Mack diverted and instead drove to his home in North Ruimveldt.

It is alleged that he then demanded that she have intercourse with him and when she refused, dealt her several blows to her body with his fist.

Mack allegedly locked the teen in a room and left the house.

He reportedly returned with another individual who allegedly held the teen down as he raped her.

Some time after the incident the teen was allowed to go home and she later made a report to the police station. Mack was arrested and later charged.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Mack be remanded to prison and transferred the case to Court Six for April 17.

More Signs of Change!!!

At last signs of changes is starting to show, the number of Black drug offenders behind bars is on the decline:

The number of African-American drug offenders in state prisons has declined for the first time since law enforcement agencies started the war on drugs 25 years ago, even as convictions of white drug offenders have increased, according to a new study released Tuesday.
The study, by the Sentencing Project, a nonprofit policy research group in Washington, found that the number of blacks in state prisons for drug crimes dropped 21.6 percent from 1999 to 2005, the last year for which data are available. The number of white drug offenders in state prisons grew by 42.6 percent in the same period.
The total number of drug offenders in state prisons increased to 253,300 in 2005 from 251,200 in 1999, according to the report.

“I’m encouraged that there are fewer African-Americans in prison for drug offenses,” said Marc Mauer, the executive director of the Sentencing Project and the report’s author. “But the overall number of blacks in prison is still high, and we’ve replaced some of those black drug offenders with white drug offenders. The racial disparity has lessened, but the overall effect of the drug war has not.”

Experts in criminal justice suggested several reasons for the decline in imprisoned black drug offenders, including a reduction in racial profiling, a drop in open-air drug sales and a cooling of the crack cocaine trade that devastated urban communities throughout the 1980s and ’90s.
The study, which was based on an analysis of data from the F.B.I. and other federal agencies, noted a sharp contrast between state and federal prisons, where there was an overall expansion of inmates — black, white and Latino — serving time for drug-related offenses.

Blacks continued to make up the largest segment — 44 percent — of all prisoners serving time for drug offenses, although they were only 12 percent of the total population, while whites, who were 75 percent of the national population, made up 27 percent of all imprisoned drug offenders. The incarceration rate for Latino drug offenders in state prisons was substantially unchanged, 20.2 percent in 2005, down from 20.7 percent in 1999.

There’s still a long road to travel, but the decline of brotha’s behind bars for drug offenses sounds like a good start, There is a God !!!

Apparently some Americans are now realising that their kids are really fat

American toddlers – especially Black and Hispanic kids – are too fat, suggesting that parents, and society as a whole, must put greater emphasis targeting obesity in early childhood.

Almost one in five American 4-year-olds are obese, and children of color represent the biggest chunk of that overweight population, according to new research.  In fact, researchers, who calculated the body mass index from a sample of 8,550 Hispanic, Black, White, Asian and Native-American 4-year-olds, found that 18.4 percent of them were obese. But there were wide differences between races.

"Significant differences in the prevalence of obesity between racial/ethnic groups were evident at 4 years of age," the researchers wrote in the April issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Using body mass index, they found that 31.2 percent of American Indian/Native Alaskans, 22 percent of Hispanics, 20.8 percent of Blacks, 15.9 percent of Whites and 12.8 percent of Asians were obese.

"It's surprising that there are large differences by racial/ethnic group by that age," said Sarah Anderson, an assistant professor of epidemiology at The Ohio State University and lead study author. Anderson and co-author Robert Whitaker's analysis showed that children were becoming obese even before encountering soda and candy vending machines in schools.

"These results really do point to the need for us to focus attention on early childhood and the need for research to understand how these differences can emerge so early," Anderson said. "To do that, we may need to understand the different family and cultural factors that are at play in these children's lives."

In regional news our South American neighbour's ex-Pressy gets 25 years for massacres!

LIMA, (Reuters) - Former Peruvian President Alberto  Fujimori was convicted of human rights crimes and sentenced to  25 years in prison yesterday, th

e first time a democratically  elected Latin American president has been found guilty in his  own country of such offenses.

A three-judge panel convicted him of ordering a military  death squad to carry out two massacres that killed 25 people  during his 1990-2000 rule, when he was battling communist  guerrillas. Nearly 70,000 people died in two decades of  conflict in the Andean country.

Once lauded as a hero, Fujimori, 70, could spend the rest  of his life in prison. The verdict is likely to have  far-reaching political implications for Peru.

“He was the president who saved our country from  terrorism,” the former president’s daughter Keiko Fujimori, a  presidential hopeful and popular lawmaker, said as she called  for supporters to march in the streets to protest the verdict.

The elder Fujimori did not react to the ruling except to  say that he will appeal it.

Fujimori’s popularity soared when he defeated the brutal  Shining Path guerrillas, tamed economic chaos and freed dozens  of hostages taken by the Tupac Amaru insurgency during a siege  at the Japanese ambassador’s house in Lima.

But a corruption scandal involving his spy chief, Vladimiro  Montesinos, sank his government in 2000. Fujimori fled to exile  in Japan, the country where his parents were born. He was later  arrested in Chile and extradited to Peru, where he often  snoozed through testimony and took off his socks.

Other Latin American rulers faced trials over human rights  crimes before Fujimori, but they were military dictators or  prosecuted outside their home countries. Chilean General  Augusto Pinochet died in 2006 before he could be convicted.

Activists saw the trial as a turning point for Peru, still  coming to terms with a bloody civil war that started in 1980.

“For the first time, the Peruvian justice system rose to  the occasion in this historic fight against impunity,” said  Gisela Ortiz, whose brother was killed at La Cantuta University  in 1992 as Fujimori’s squads hunted for presumed leftists.

Fujimori’s conviction stemmed from the La Cantuta killings  and a 1991 massacre in the Barrios Altos section of Lima.

Many abuses by people on both sides of the civil war have  never been prosecuted, and thousands of unmarked graves scar  the countryside.

The Shining Path, led by a Maoist philosophy professor  named Abimael Guzman, was perhaps the most brutal of Latin  America’s insurgencies. It beheaded people with machetes in the  plazas of Andean towns, bombed the capital and killed  journalists. Guzman is currently in prison in Peru.

The state, which was nearly toppled, struggled for years to  halt the onslaught and sent guns to groups of vigilante  peasants in the hinterlands to help the army.

The violence also ensnared the current president, Alan  Garcia. He has been haunted by accusations that he violated  rights during his first term from 1985-1990. Pressure to put  him on trial may grow following the Fujimori verdict.

“With this ruling … the Peruvian court has shown the  world that even former heads of state cannot expect to get away  with serious crimes,” said Maria McFarland of the group Human  Rights Watch.

Garcia has fended off charges by saying he was a democratic  leader who lacked total control over the military, whereas  Fujimori turned into an authoritarian president and shut down  Congress.

Already a front-runner for the 2011 presidential race,  Fujimori’s daughter, a conservative like her father, has  painted the former president as a savior rather than sinner.

If no candidate wins a majority in the initial election,  the 33-year-old could end up in a run-off against fellow  hopeful Ollanta Humala, a leftist ally of Venezuelan President  Hugo Chavez, who nearly won in 2006.

Garcia, who is barred by the country’s constitution from  running for re-election in 2011, has told foreign investors he  will do his best to derail Humala’s candidacy by persuading  Peruvians to reject leftist models that have regained  popularity in Latin America.

Teen who suffered knife attacks is in stable condition..ofcourse NO arrests made by our infamous Police

Stacey Chandra, the 13-year-old who sustained serious stab wounds following a knife attack on Sunday evening, is still a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is listed as being in a stable condition.

Debbie Chandra, the child’s mother, told Stabroek News that there has since been no further development into the matter. The older Chandra explained that statements were taken from her daughter but added that no arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, commenting on her daughter’s medical condition, Debbie said that the child has to have an ultrasound done at a private hospital before her discharge can be considered. This, the mother however noted, would be done sometime later this month when she would have acquired the money needed for it.

According to Debbie, the mother of the perpetrators has kept her children in hiding, which she said may be the reason why no one has been taken into custody.

Chandra, a student of Queenstown Community High School and a resident of Tiger Bay, was involved in an altercation with a boy. He subsequently went to fetch an older brother and sister, who confronted Chandra, the brother pulling a large pen knife and passing it on to the sister for her to attack Chandra.

On the night of the incident, the injured Chandra told her mother from her hospital bed that the girl rushed her so quickly she had no time to think. She was stabbed three times: in the neck, in the shoulder and in the rib.

Chandra was on her way home after plying her regular trade as a plastic bag vendor at the Stabroek Market. She would sell after school to assist with her school-related expenses. According to reports reaching this newspaper, after the attack, Chandra’s attackers stood calmly and watched as she was transported to the hospital. A man, who was with Chandra at the time, also received minor injuries during the attack when he attempted to intervene.

The attackers are said to be in their late teens and/or early twenties are known to Chandra.

Some PUNKS with AKs Shoot up Brazilian

A Brazilian dredge owner was shot three times by heavily armed bandits who descended on his camp at Arangoy, Cuyuni River early yesterday morning, robbing and beating his employees before escaping.

A joint services team has since been dispatched to the area, the police said in a press release last evening.  Edmilson De Souza Arango, 32, of Robb Street, was up to last night receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital. He sustained two gunshot wounds to his back and another to his left arm but is in a stable condition.

The police said investigations revealed that a group of six men armed with guns entered the mining camp around 6.30 am yesterday. In the camp at the time were Arango’s wife, Maria Chaves Silva and five workers, comprising three Guyanese and two Brazilians. “The men began to assault Chaves Silva and the five workers using their firearms while demanding gold.

During this, Edmilson De Souza Arango approached the camp and was shot and injured to his upper back. The armed men then took away a quantity of raw gold from the workers and escaped,” the police said.

Police sources said that the bandits were armed with “Ak-47’s and small guns”. Following the incident, a plane went to the area and returned to the city with the injured man last yesterday afternoon.

Arango and Silva are unable to speak English and a friend, who operates a business in the area, came to the city with them. The woman, who asked not to be identified, told Stabroek News that she learnt that around 6.30 am, Arango had gotten up and was brushing his teeth when three men accosted him. They demanded money and gold but he told them that he had nothing to give, she said, adding that production had not been going well. There were three other bandits inside the camp.

Police sources, meanwhile, said that when the bandits arrived at the camp, they started shooting and Arango concealed himself. He came out when the bandits threatened to shoot his wife and was shot.

“After they shoot him, they search the whole camp and carry away everything,” the friend told this newspaper. The bandits looted the camp, gun-butting the employees in the process.  Through an interpreter, Silva said that the bandits took passports, gold scales, metal detectors and clothing. She said they demanded gold and money from her but she told them that she did not have any. The Brazilian national was beaten about her upper body and head with a revolver. Silva said no gold or cash was taken since they did not have any, but “costume jewellery” brought from Brazil–which the bandits apparently thought was made of real gold–was grabbed during the attack. It was not clear how the bandits arrived at or escaped from the remote area, which has few roads.

The businesswoman, meanwhile, related that after the bandits left, Arango called her camp via two-way radio and she and others went and assisted in transporting him to the landing and then by boat for three hours to the nearest airstrip, from where he was flown to the city.

Arango had been operating in the area for four years and this is the first time he has been robbed.

Last June, another Brazilian miner, who was attached to another camp in the same area, was shot five times by bandits. Jose Leache, 46, had sustained wounds to his abdomen, both thighs and left hand.

Reports at the time had stated that Leache was heading to the Aranka Landing on an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), along with his wife, Neach Da Silva, and an employee on June 1 last year, when four masked bandits, two of whom were armed with guns, struck. The men held them at gunpoint and ordered Da Silva and the employee to get off the vehicle after which several shots were discharged at Leache and the men escaped. He was hit and later transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Stabroek News had been told at the time that the men emerged from the bushes and forced the ATV to stop. The men attacked Leache and shot him while Da Silva hid behind the vehicle and the employee ran to the landing which was close-by to alert persons there. The bandits were unable to take anything from Leache, as Da Silva was shouting and persons alerted by the employee came out. The bandits quickly disappeared into the bushes. Leache was taken to the landing and transported from the area by boat.

It was the second time that he had been attacked for that year. During the first attack in February 2008, the bandits attempted to shoot him but the gun did not fire.

Husband tells wife to prostitute herself to provide for children! Beat her after she refused!

Thirty-seven year old Richie Hicks called Richie Alexander who told his wife she should go and prostitute herself to get money to cook and send their children to school was given some time to reflect on his attitude with a couple of days on remand.

Hicks of 5th Street, Whim, Corentyne, Berbice, was on Thursday refused bail by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared before him at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of unlawfully assaulting his reputed wife of 14 years, Dhanwantie Ramgobin.

Prosecutor Roberto Figueira told the Court that on March 30, Hicks, who was described as a regular wife beater, went home after work and refused to give his wife any money to cook or to send his children to school.

The Prosecutor said that the woman told her daughter to ask her father for money to go to school and buy things to eat.
Instead hicks told the child to tell her mother that if she wants money let her go and ‘pick fare’ on the road.

The woman had told investigators that she was fed up with the situation at home and was on her way out of the house to go and look for work, when the man held her and started cuffing her in her head, causing visible swelling.

The woman was also thrown to the ground and kicked in the ribs.

She managed to escape and later made a report to the station. The abuser was arrested and charged.

The Lucky Dube murder case...

On Thursday the South African court jailed three men for life for the murder of international reggae star Lucky Dube, the SAPA news agency reported. The Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday found Sifiso Mhlanga, Mbuti Mabe and Julius Gxowa guilty of gunning down the world acclaimed singer during a botched hijacking in October 2007.

“The sentence won’t heal me, but we are happy they were arrested and that the law took its course,” said Dube’s wife Zanele who cried uncontrollably after the sentencing, SAPA reported.

The award-winning South African singer was dropping off his teenage son at a relative’s home when gunmen shot him three times at close range.

Dube, 43, who recorded in Zulu, English and Afrikaans, was one of the first to play reggae in his homeland and was widely admired abroad.

The musician’s killing provoked worldwide condemnation and renewed domestic calls for the restoration of the death penalty in a bid to stem one of the world’s highest murder rates.

Dube recorded more than 20 albums in a career spanning two decades and was regarded as one of the first artistes to introduce reggae in South Africa.
