Guyanese DONNA MAKEDA on a Musical Mission....Will Also be home for GAMA

When the curtain is raised on April 25 at the National Cultural Centre to honour Guyanese artistes at home and in the Diaspora, Canada-based Guyanese artiste, Donna Makeda, will be among the lot.

This very conscious, positive vibes, reggae queen in her own right is among the nominees who will perform for the GAMA and is promising Guyana a taste of quality reggae that is "culturally uplifting".

“I live overseas but Guyana is and always will be home. I feel honoured to be heading back there this year to be part of the historical music awards. I believe that this is a step in the right direction for artistes to network and work together for the common good of all Guyanese artistes,” she said.

Dubbed by those in the ‘Culture Music know’ in Canada “a definite musical force to be reckoned with,” Makeda was among the lot honoured with crystals at the inaugural GAMA 2008 event in Canada.

With about three albums in her repertoire, some of her singles include “Don’t you break my Heart” done on the Old Fashion Love rhythm produced by Mr. Cooper and Ras Vibes Records and “Need Some Money” which climbed the charts on Galaxie Reggae.

Another “Hold On” done in 2007 was mixed in Kingston Jamaica by the legendary Dr. Marshall of Anchor Studio.

The single “Need Some Money” was written and produced by Prince Everald and the rhythm courtesy of African Star.

Donna, though not as popular in Guyana, is no-one hit wonder. Internationally, she also received honours from the Toronto International Reggae Music Awards for “Roots & Culture” Album of the Year and on that occasion the album was for her album “Jah Ah De Rulah”. All told she has more than 14 awards to date.

Because of her musical abilities, she performed at the Calgary International Reggae Festival and created quite an impact on the 6000-strong audience with her dynamic and impressive showcase.

In August 2004, this entertainer with her talented dance cast ‘The Caribbean Dance Theatre’, created quite a stir that was much pleasing to the audience.

Her performance was referred to as “a storybook’ and “dreamlike” by the viewers, who said that it was the most memorable performance they had ever seen. Donna received the Consul General’s Award at the Guyana Awards as she was honoured for her steadfast commitment and service to the Guyanese community. She also walked away with the 2004 Female Dancehall DJ of The Year Award at the 20th Canadian Reggae Music Awards.

Donna’s other awards include: “Top Reggae Newcomer” 1993, “Top Reggae Dancehall DJ (female) 1995, 1996 and 1999 and 2003 and “Top Reggae Music Video (for her video “Jah Great Woman”) in 1995 from the Canadian Reggae Music Awards. And “Arts & Entertainment Award” for her contribution to the Arts from her home country – Guyana in 2000, and an “Artistic Award of Excellence” from the Inter-City Multicultural School of Excellence Reading Club in 2001.

Donna released a 12-track album titled “Jah Ah De Rulah” which includes songs like “Come Into My Life” featuring Prince Everald, a slamming, conscious track. It also included the hit single “Make Love, Not War” featuring Roger B, “In My House” featuring Negus Morris of the Heptones, the ever popular “Folk Song Medley” and ‘Sweet Victory’ (groundation dub).

She has done opening acts for internationally renowned artistes such as Capleton, Coco Tea, Marcia Griffiths, Sister Carol, Culture, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Michael Rose, Cutty Ranks, Yami Bolo, Anthony B, George Nooks and Louie Culture.

Donna has performed extensively in Canada in places like Toronto, Brantford, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary, also internationally in Barbados, Guyana, New York and Jamaica.

Her song “Sweet Victory” was Number One on the reggae charts in Miami for eight weeks while “South Africa” (from her CD “Who Can Endure” released 1998) followed closely at #2. “Jah Great Woman” also enjoyed much airplay and was #1 in Miami for six weeks.

The “Jah Great Woman” music video, which was done with the help of Videofact, was on high rotation on Much Music and played in Jamaica, Barbados and New York on selected programmes. Donna signed a licensing deal with Amiata Records in Italy for the remix of her song “Life Story” and also was involved in many stage plays where she performed as an actress, dancer and singer.

She also starred in a Documentary film titled “Roots Daughters” alongside Judy Mowatt and that film is constantly being aired on television throughout the world. She also released two music videos such as “Who Can Endure” and “Make Love Not War”.

Since 1993, this multi-talented, untiring artist has released two full length CD’s titled “Who Can Endure” and “Jah Ah De Rulah”, two cassette-albums (Who Can Endure & Sweet Victory), two vinyl-singles (Sweet Victory & Jah Ah De Rulah & Wonder Weed), one vinyl-album (for Who Can Endure), two compilation CDs with Canadian Music Week and four CD singles (Just Hurry, Money Crazy, Make Love Not War and Family Medley – Part 1). Donna has appeared live numerous times on City TV’s Breakfast Television, Entertainment News, Clip Trip, The Scene, Lunch Television, Rogers Cable 10, Soul in the City and Da Mix (Canada).

This Guyanese born dread locked sing-jay is also a graduate of Trebas Institute where she received her diploma in Recorded Music Production and Multimedia and also is the proud owner of her own music label “DONNA MAKEDA MUSIC” and a quarterly music magazine called “REGGAEXCLUSIVE Entertainment News” which recently won two awards for “Top Reggae Magazine”.

Donna started singing and performing 25 years ago. Her foundation in music came from the church, which she attended when she was a little girl. Donna started out as a dancer; she was trained in Afro-Caribbean Dance, Modern Dance, Folk Dance, Kathak and Classical Ballet. At age 16, she opened her own dance and aerobics school: “Burning Flame International” Dance Troupe.

By the time Donna got to Canada, she had already been performing extensively throughout Guyana with her dance troupe. Singing at that time was just a fun thing for her.

Upon sighting Rastafari, Donna took her music more seriously and began writing lyrics and practicing on sound systems, singing at various stage shows and winning many competitions.

Without a doubt, her voice is her wealth; her intellect a cultural strength, and her stage presence is an expression of royal heritage.

Canada Based Guyanese CYBORG coming home for GAMA..."Focus on His Work At The Moment

In an industry of many talents dominated by few comes a musical storm – Cyborg. Born and raised in the rough and tumble ghettos of Albouystown - Georgetown, Guyana, Keith Sandiford quickly earned the name Cyborg from his gifted ability to quickly create lyrics on the spot.

He is among more than 29 Guyanese artistes residing in the Diaspora who should be heading home for the Guyana Artistic Music Awards, GAMA carded for April 25. He will also be among the performers at the upcoming Guyana Musical Splash billed for Thirst Park on April 17.

Son of local reggae artist, Sangie, it was a natural fit that Cyborg would one day find himself at the centre of a group of youths, singing and deejaying at his school.

Realizing the artistic gift he possessed to thrill audiences, Cyborg made it his mission to nurture his talents and bring them to the stage for the world.

Upon migrating to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Cyborg began performing songs by his favourite reggae artist with local sound system – Baseline Sound- (1998). Cyborg then was steadily working in the studio writing and producing his original music. In 2001 Cyborg release his first recorded single –"Plan to Make Millions"- marking the start of his vinyl career.

The great response to his work would soon lead to the first of many professional showcases and appearances on national and international stages. In March 2001 Cyborg was granted his first major performance at – The Canada Explosion Show- where he performed alongside dancehall greats such as Barrington Levy, Everton Blender and the Explorer family which signalled a change in Cyborg's career marking a change in status from armature to professional.

Since then, he has performed alongside reggae artists such as Brigadier Jerry, Singing Melody and countless others. As part of the first ever Reggae Festivals in both Montreal and Toronto, Cyborg has proven himself to be a trendsetter and an asset in Canada's Reggae music Industry.

Inspired by the hardships he faced growing up, and by musical greats like Jimmy Cliff and Gregory Isaacs, Cyborg finds his solace in the one drop of reggae music. His commitment to the upliftment of the youths has earned him certificates from Toronto Community Housing for giving his time to perform for young people at their annual Black History Month Celebration (2004), as well as Jamaica Canadian Center, and Unity is strength community group in 2008.

Truly an international talent, Cyborg performed on the "St Mary Mi Come From" show on his 2007 tour to the Home of Reggae Music, Jamaica. It was on this tour that he graced the stage with the likes of Jah Cure, Sizzla, Ninja Man, Chuck Fender and many more of Jamaica's finest musical exports. In 2008 Cyborg Travelled to Jamaica and recorded a track with Computer Paul and the Uprising Band.

Coining the term "Mad@Work" Cyborg is doing just that. He is currently working on a series of mix tapes that will feature his original works and that was followed up with a Cd release in 2009.

The Iron Man Roots Fest' Delivers Despite Poor Turnout

The Iron Man Roots Fest staged on March 20 at the National Park may have been a major financial disappointment to the promoters but for those who attended the show was a great one.
Just about 200 patrons turned out to see the artiste but that did not stop Bush man from delivering a welcomed performance.

Shevvon Mentus and Justin Leigh who promoted the Iron Man Roots Fest speaking to this publication said that despite the poor turn out we promised and we delivered…we believe that our show had poor support because of what unfolded at the last show but we are not phased because we believe in the local entertainment industry and with time people will realise that we deliver and will support us.”

Mentus said too that in her estimation the show was a wonderful show despite and “we are proud of the artiste’s performance”.
The Roots Fest was carded to be staged in Guyana on March 6 originally but that show was postponed to March 20 on the advice of officials from the Home Affairs Ministry after the preceding show that proved a disaster. Bottles rained and damaged more than $3m worth of equipment after the artistes were no shows.

The roots fest promoters are promising that since their show was incident free that “This is not the last show Bushman will be returning with other artistes later in the year”. Meanwhile as much as they did not make anything from the show the Promoters still delivered food to the children at the Durban Backlands home.

Canadian Soul Singer Melanie Fiona "travels in time"

Melanie Fiona travels through time and speaks on her roots and her love for her own style as an artist in an recent interview with (nydailynews.com)

check out the interview below.

Source: nydailynews.com

Melanie Fiona travels through time in her music. Play her records, and you're trans-ported back to the DayGlo days of mod '60s soul, a time when snappy Motown songs ruled the charts and shiny go-go boots defined the fashion.

While many modern stars have gone for retro-soul sounds over the past decade - from Lauryn Hill to Maxwell - Fiona aims for something more bright, poppy and pruned. Luckily, her connection to history hasn't stopped her from climbing steadily on today's charts. Her debut CD, "The Bridge," has seen building sales over the past few months, slowly inching its way into the Top 30 in the last few weeks, goosed by a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

This week, the 26-year-old Canadian singer (born Melanie Fiona Hallim) played the Garden, opening for another star with an eye on soul history, Alicia Keys. Which makes one wonder.
How did a girl from Canada — born to Guyanese parents — get that vintage, finger-popping sound?

My parents were big music lovers and played soul music all the time. They loved the Supremes, the Ronettes and Sam Cooke, along with music from their West Indian heritage. My dad also played guitar in a band, and my mom sang all the time in the house.
Do you think your sound has brought you an older audience than it otherwise might?

Yes. I feel like I have an old soul anyway. Older audiences are hard to win over. They're very specific in their tastes and critical of new music. But my music seems to have spoken to both generations.

You got a Grammy nomination this year before many people even heard of you. Did that make a difference?

It made a big difference. Now whenever anybody mentions me, they talk about me as a "Grammy-nominated artist."

Your album uses a lot of prominent samples of classics: The first single, "Give It to Me Right," is based on the Zombies' "Time of the Season." But you've also got bits of Frankie Avalon's "Venus," Martha and the Vandellas' "Jimmy Mack" and Eddie Holman's "Hey There Lonely Girl."

Were you ever self-conscious about using so many older hits in your music?

I feel this album is a tribute to my influences. It's also a kind of history lesson. A song like "Time of the Season," people know it, but they may have forgotten where they know it from. This helps put the spotlight back on these artists.
It's interesting that your breakthrough hit in America, "It Kills Me," is the most contemporary-sounding number.

I knew that song would shift the market to the urban listener and appeal to people here. In Europe, it's more open. They just like music. They don't care where it comes from. In America, it's more segmented by radio formats.

When did your parents come to Canada from Guyana — and why?

They came in the late '70s, before I was born. They wanted a better life. Canada had the good health-care system and educational system. It was a privilege for me to grow up there. But it was hard, at first, for my parents. They came from the tropics to a cold country. They had never seen snow before. At first, my dad worked as a janitor. My parents came a long way. Now my dad works in finance. My mom is in banking.

Your first break came from the Caribbean side of your musical influences. You got a Jamaican-styled song on the "Reggae Gold" series. Why didn't you stick with reggae?

If I had done a reggae album, I would be known as a reggae artist. And I didn't want to be pigeonholed. Basing the music on soul was a good foundation to be more diverse. I could mix it with rock, R&B or anything.

How did you get your record deal with Universal?

I had a deal with a production company, and for five years we developed what I would do. Steve Rifkind at Universal had a commitment to keeping the sound as it was. Another label might have tried to change me. Steve was on the same page.

Why did you call the album "The Bridge"?

Because we were bridging cultures, genres, generations and ethnicities.

What do you say to those who find your music too retro?

Retro can be a crutch. I don't want to be seen as going only where music has already been. I'm also about where music is going next.(www.nydailynews.com)

Guyana Model Search Auditions kicks off with some Surprises

The year’s first official fashion event kicked off this past weekend at the Tower Hotel and GSB.com took front row seats at the auditions for stylist/ designer portfolio/ Guyana model search 2010 to give you exactly what went down. Things got started on time as expected and persons came out in their numbers representing almost all of the regions, the panel of judges included Pamela Dillon, Kirk Kimbridge, Vivian Dash, Richard Younge and former Miss Guyana Universe Meleesa Payne.

The first two persons to hit the auditions floor for the modeling aspect of things were Dellon Renee and Jenelle Dougall, who both said it’s their very first time doing something in this arena and that they were both nervous and shy but noted, “yes it’s going to be a challenge one which their ready to take on.

The years first official fashion event seems to be in the brew already as our reporter took front row seats at the auditions for stylist/ designer portfolio/ Guyana model search and stumbled on a sight that will surely raise eyebrows and will defiantly be followed by a barrage of questions.

Although there were some new faces added to the regular crown. There were some faces that were not expected… seriously not expected, and for those who keep up to beat with “what’s happening” in the fashion industry, or entertainment as hole, we’re pretty sure your jaws would be dropping too.

As we spotted Michelle Cole’s current designer assistant, yep that’s right Michelle Cole’s assistant, not that alone was enough to raise brows and ask “what’s up now?”. What really steered our interest was the earlier auditioning of David Clarke, the former contestant of the 2008 hit series FACTS ( Fashion Arts and Creativity by Talented Students) and the later host and public relations officer of the shows 2009 edition. Sources close to Facts’N’Roses say that Mr. Clarke terminated his own employment as the company’s mash camp was in full swing and tensions began to run a bit too high.

When both Sydney Francois ( current designer assistant for Michelle Cole) and David Clarke were approached the both refused to make any comments about their current relationship with designing duo Michelle Cole and husband Trevor Rose, except that David Clarke is no longer employed by the couples company (Fasts’N’Roses).
Be sure to stay tuned for more on this and remember to support your favorite contestant in the competition.

View pictures below of some of the contestants.

All roads lead to the National Park tonight for the Roots Fest international show that features Jamaican artiste Bushman and his band, as well as Guyana’s own First Born in concert.

The show was postponed to today upon the advice of Home Affairs Ministry officials. The promoters are promising that there will be no glitches as was the case with the last show hosted by another promoter.

Promoter Justin Leigh, called Roots Man, told this publication that “Everything is paid for and all is in place. People just need to come out and have a good time.”

The artiste, Bushman, and his full band were scheduled to arrive in Guyana last night and will today be making several promotional stops before performing tonight.

This is the first time that the Jamaican artiste Bushman will be performing Live in Guyana.

Tonight’s show is the first on the heels of the Mash Explosion that exploded when Baby Cham and Anthony B arrived in Guyana but did not perform. For the persons who bought tickets for the previous show date the promoter has assured that those tickets are still valid and are still on sale at the same locations.

Some of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the less fortunate children at several children’s homes.
This is the group’s first show with plans for at least two others for 2010.

Ky-Mani Marley's new book may be causing drama in the Family

Some rumors have been circulating on a number of websites, which is suggesting that Ky-Mani Marley son of reggae legend Bob Marley, wrote new book claiming he was deprived of his father's fortune for years and his half-bothers and half-sisters, are sparking a row that could trigger legal action over it. See full report below.

Source:
Ky-Mani Marley's "Dear Dad" hit booksellers' stands February 6, when the late reggae icon would have turned 65.

It has quickly become a major headache for this 34-year-old son of Marley.

The author, aware of the family squabbling it could unleash, tried to delay its release, and to tweak the content -- but he failed.

Now there is a dispute between Ky-Mani Marley and his editor Farrah Gray, a young businessman of 24 over the veracity of content of the book. Their clash could end up in court, both told media in the United States and Jamaica in recent days.

"The book was not an attack on my family. I love my brothers and sisters more than anyone can know," Ki-Mani Marley, a Jamaican actor and musician who is a son of Bob Marley and table tennis champ Anita Belnavis, said in a statement on his MySpace page.

The book says on its cover that it contains the "story the Marley family apparently didn't want you to know."

Among other themes, the book claims its author was kept from accessing his fathers' fortune by Marley's widow Rita. It also claims Rita Marley tried to keep the money for her children with Marley while denying financial support to his children with six other women.

"I did not expect that Dr. Gray would have unprofessional and malicious in twisting my words or using things that were discussed in confidence to create controversy in an attempt to sell a book," Ky-Mani Marley added.

"During the final edit of the book, I spoke with my sister, Cedella, and I advised Dr. Farrah Gray that some changes had to be made and until the changes were made, I was not willing to do any promotion for the book," the author added.

But the editor was unmoved by what he said was the younger Marley's backtracking.

"His denials have thrown me and the publishing company under the bus. I didn't write his book, I published it. This is his story; these are his words and now I have to prove it," Gray argued.

Sonia Noel Showcased Designs at Prestigious Ivy League University!

On her quest to make Guyana proud, Sonia Neol recently had the opportunity to showcased some of designes at the Prestigious Ivy League University

Source: Walter Greene of Carib News, NY

Brown University, the prestigious Ivy League University where the Kennedy family attended in Rhode Island was abuzz with activities surrounding Caribbean Heritage Month. The Students of Caribbean Ancestry (SOCA) hosted the events that was highlighted by an oral presentation and fashion show by the premier Guyanese fashion designer MS SONIA NOEL, who is also the founder and CEO of Guyana Fashion Weekend.

This was the first time a Caribbean fashion designer was invited as the featured guest at this yearly event and Sonia took the opportunity to address students on the development of the Caribbean fashion brand and the promotion of Caribbean talent in general, be it fashion, performing arts and culture. Sonia spoke about the ethnic mix of the Guyana’s population and how each of their individual cultural background has blended into a Guyanese signature aesthetic. Using the backdrop of Guyana’s famous flora and fauna, mixed with the complexities of the six races that make up the Guyanese population, Sonia emphasized the uniqueness of the nation.

It was great to see so many students from Caribbean parents who were very proud to have Caribbean ancesters.one student came up and introduce herself as being Guyanese and ask where in Guyana she was from and she said her mother is Guyanese but she regard herself as one

At the close of her speech, the talented young designer presented excerpts from her current collection that was inspired by the Low Carbon Development Plan to preserve Guyana’s rain forest. This initiative is a main focus of the country’s President Hon. Bharrat Jagdeo. Sonia was able to fuse that idea with a sizzling resort collection that also celebrated the undergrowth of the rain forest. "I used shades of greens and browns to signify the earth and leaves of the rain forest. It was called the `Hybrid Collection’ and all the fabrics were natural fibers in linens and cottons, including the treasured Sea Island Cotton," said Sonia a few days after the presentation.

Yanely Espinal, president of the Students of Caribbean Ancestry (SOCA) and a third year student, Brown University noted: "I found out about Sonia Noel while researching for Caribbean fashions on line. I looked at some of her work and loved it. I contacted her and she was very polite and responsive. She was excited to work with University students to educate the greater college community about Caribbean issues. The show had a great impact at this University and everyone is still excited about the events. Working with Sonia was an amazing experience and I know that she will continue to succeed in the future because she has a great personality, she’s dedicated and extremely talented."

Sonia used all members of the students body to model her collection which was a big hit with students. Amanda Kautz, a second year student who was one of the models in the showcase said: "Sonia was not judgmental or critical of people’s bodies. She had designs for all different body types. That was very cool. People were really happy with what they were wearing. She was very flexible, and it was much appreciated and made us really like her." Fedna Jacquet, a second year student at Brown also praised Sonia for her work that was displayed: "I thought her collection was extremely diverse. It ranged from fun to sexy and sophisticated."

Sonia has a very hectic year ahead of her commencing with the Guyana Models Search Designers portfolio on the 20th&21 of march at the Tower Hotel. This year female models will be eligible from size 2 to 14.

'Bring It’ T/20 Song to be Launched at the Edge Night Club on Saturday 20th 2k10

Mr Vegas, Fay-Ann Lyons to perform live

Energy, hype and pulsating entertainment is always associated with performances from Jamaican Dancehall artist Mr Vegas and Trinidadian Soca performer Fay-Ann Lyons and nothing less is expected tonight from 22:00hrs at the Edge Nightclub at the Tower Hotel in Georgetown when they perform for the first time live the theme song for the 2010 T/20 cricket World Cup which starts in Guyana on April 30.

The two celebrated Caribbean entertainers have joined forces for the making of the up tempo Soca and Dancehall mix theme song and the pair has promised an energized performance tonight at the official launching of the song in Guyana.

The Edge, Guyana’s latest and most modern nightclub has a capacity of 400 and tickets for tonight’s show is $2,500.

Accompanied by her musician husband Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, a three-time Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Road March champion (2003, 2008, 2009) who won the 2009 International Soca Monarch title while pregnant, explained the concept of the ‘Bring it’ song at a press conference yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium.

With hit songs like Lyon Empress, Mane the Matriach and Silver Surfer, the 30-year-old Fay-Ann said some feel that the ‘fete’ atmosphere at sports is not necessary but explained that she felt is was needed since Caribbean people are not passive people.

“The party atmosphere does not take away from the professionalism of the players and could actually inspire them because of the manner in which we celebrate,” Fay-Ann said.

Also present at the Stadium yesterday was 35-year-old Clifford Smith, know in the music industry as Mr Vegas after being given that nickname by his schoolyard football-mates, who thought that he kicked the ball like a Las Vegas dancer.

Rhonda Kelly, of Kelly/Holdings Limited, has been contracted to coordinate the activities of the artists for the first ever T/20 World Cup in the West Indies. She was also present yesterday.

Mr Vegas, who was hit in the face with a crowbar and had his jaw wired shut for six weeks after a scuffle over stolen master tapes, found fame in 1998 with hits such as Yu Sure, Jack It Up, and Latest News.

Mr Vegas informed that the ‘Bring it’ song, which was mainly written by USA based Jamaican Marlon Chin and developed by Fay-Ann and Mr Vegas, is all about bringing the positives to the matches.

‘The ICC wanted the energy … when they approached us they wanted to attract the youths. It’s not like when I was a youth. Back then you said cricket and everyone would tell you about the match they watched the night before. Now many of the youths don’t have that interest for cricket which is still the national sport of the West Indies. You talk about West Indies cricket now and many youths can tell you who Manchester United beat in football,” Mr Vegas explained.

Kelly disclosed that the ICC brought the concept of the song to the singers and they finished off the writing of the lyrics which was started by Chin.

Fay-Ann says the song encourages the entire family to come out to support the West Indies team and celebrate being Caribbean people. She songbird said the song is not only a party song but it is also very informative.

Both artists said they were honored to have been chosen to perform the theme song for the world event.

“I remember growing up and listening to cricket on the radio without even seeing the match and feeling if I was there. I remember Dujon and Richards batting and now to be actually involved in helping to inspire our present players with this song is humongous,” Mr Vegas said.

Both entertainers said they hoped they could create the right vibes at the venues to entertain the fans and motivate the players.

Bunji Garlin said he was here to not only support Fay-Ann as his wife and Mr Vegas as his ‘brethren’ but as someone who is proud to be a West Indian.

The singers and Kelly visited Antigua, Jamaica and Trinidad before coming here but tonight will be the very first time that the duo will be performing their riveting rendition since they did not perform in the three Islands they visited.

Guyana is also the first host venue that the singers are visiting and they are scheduled to tour the Islands which will also host matches (Barbados & St Lucia) before going to St Kitts which will host matches in the Womens division of the T/20 World Cup.

Sabrina Panday, who runs the Guyana ICC T/20 secretariat, said that the concept for the song was born after what transpired during the 2007 World Cup hosted by the West Indies.

“There were so many restrictions …some many thing you could not bring….it took away a lot from the atmosphere of West Indian cricket. This T/20 World Cup is a lot more relaxed without compromising security and the fans are being encouraged to bring it, the drums, the horns, the noise, the fun. The song also urges the West Indies players to bring their best game,” Panday said.
Mr Vegas said it’s all about bringing the positives and the energy while Fay-Ann said the ticket prices should encourage the fans to bring their friends in large numbers since the atmosphere, the rhythm section in the party stand, the fun and frolic and what should be enterprising cricket should all combine to create what should be an unforgettable event.

Solid Youth releases "SOLID AS A ROCK" 12 Track Album.

“Yah know that I’m back, pun de attack, they try to make me drop, but I’m solid as a rock…as a matter of fact Satan get drop”

The words of one of the very infectious hooks set to dancehall vibes on a new 12-track gospel laced dance hall/ reggae album from Bartician David Yasin aka Solid Youth.

The third such album to date in his musical career, this album new one produced in Jamaica is now available at Gift Land office Max with plans for expansion to other record stores and judging from rave reviews and sales in Florida it must be really and inspirational on another front.

“I launched it in Florida with a concert and people really liked the songs so much so that the bought a whole lot of the original CD.”

The produced and released recently that features songs such as ‘UR Gonna Make it’, ‘Love is the Key’, ‘Krazy,’ ‘Rise up’, ‘Saints’, ‘lively up yah self’, ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m back’.

The married youth first tried out the songs on an album launch tour in parts of the USA he will be among the performers at the Youth Explosion carded for March 27 at the National Cultural Centre where persons can pick up an original copy too.

The album also has combination songs with Jamaican artistes Zeela Mac and St. Matthew such as ‘Come unto me’, ‘I worship U’ and ‘Christ Representa.’

Among the inspirational tracks is one that serves to uplift the down trodden stating that “You are gonna make it…you are gonna live and not die…all you gotta do is pray and Jah will make a way.”

Addressing world issues the album also features the universal anthem that ‘Love is the key, we are one family’, but closer to home the artiste amidst his gospel centred up bringing in Bartica he too recalls the dreaded morning that is forever etched in the minds of Guyanese when death stalked First Avenue Bartica and the other unfolding of slaughter in Lusignan.

He sings “Rise up this morning and turn my TV on, only to find out 11 more gone…this is not the time to argue and fight lets all unite… we’ve got our indifferences but we can sit down and talk about this…love is the key open up your eyes and see.’

The Guyanese artiste who is resolute in his praises to God and his unwavering love for Jesus Christ for his talent recently returned from the USA and is aiming to take Guyanese music positively to the highest dancehall level.

Proof that dancehall has no face or ethnic bias, Solid Youth of East Indian ancestry says he aims to prove that young men are not all negative and hopes that his music will inspire those who have stumbled to come up higher in Christ for positive and productive living.

Singing since age 15, Solid Youth became popular for his take on teen sex when he sang “Get it in yah head abstinence…stop talk ignorance, no wed no bed,” a message that sharply contrasted all talk of condom use and early sexual activity as opposed to marriage.”

His parents are pastors and as such he played drums in his home church but had his fair share of lashes and suspension for grabbing more attention due to his chanting of popular dance hall lyrics during school hours.

Then as he said, “I realised that I was always embarrassing my parents and decided to make a change. Now I have no regrets and the sky is the limit to what I can have.”

His first album was recorded at Kingdom Friends in Guyana and launched in 2004 with a theme of Spiritual warfare. Then came ‘Judgement day’ produced in Trinidad with Sherwin Gardner at Flow-master records.

His memorable songs from those include: we nah believe in safer sex and ‘abstinence’ which was followed by a video.

How did this artiste end up in Jamaica? He said he met and established a communications network with St Mathew an international gospel artiste and he eventually winged out to Jamaica.

The recordings were completed in just about two weeks and he also completed a music video for the song ‘I’m back’ which he is also releasing to all television stations locally.
Prior to this album launch, he has performed in several states in the USA at various Christian functions as well as in the Caribbean. Of this new album the artiste said he believes that this is the best thus far in his career.

Trevor Rose Living his Childhood Dream.......Secures third 'Designer of the Year' Award

After visiting the John Fernandes Mash Camp and falling in love with the wire-bending and costume creations, Trevor Rose decided, “I’m going to be a designer.” So enthralled was he that he immediately joined that camp and began working. The brazen youth then decided at age 13, when he applied for his passport, to write 'designer' as his occupation. He of course was still at school. After years of sitting at the feet of Fernandes in his Mash Camp, the ambitious youngster is currently living his childhood dream.
On Friday last, as the curtains came down on the 2010 Mashramani activities, which was arguably one of the better events in recent times, Rose edged out fellow designer Olympia Sonaram by two points, to be adjudged 'Designer of the year' for a third time.
He designed for two mega companies Banks DIH and Guyana Power and Light Inc., and both of them came out among the winners.
Banks DIH returned to the route after four years while GPL was a first timer in the float parade. Both companies have no regrets as they won most of the top prizes in the many categories in which they competed.
“I’m happy that I’ve been able to do the companies proud with some quality creations. I am encouraged even further and will always strive for the best in my costume creations. I intend to maintain that level as an inspiration and a motivator to other aspirants,” Rose said
Through the Banks DIH band, he won 'Best King Costume', 'Best full costume large band', 'Best Commercial float', 'Best semi costume large band 'and 'Best designer' in each category.
For his efforts in bringing GPL on the road with a medium full costume band of 120, he placed second in full costume medium and second in the queen costume.
Notable too is the fact that many believe that the PPP would have won a place in the individual King costume category if it had entered, but it did not. Rose was the designer for that costume too, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Party.
Last year Rose was 'left in the wilderness' when major companies pulled out of the Mash float parade at the last minute and while some expressed that they admired his quality work they described him as 'a bit excessive, in terms of spending, to deliver the best'.
The 29-year-old celebrating last evening at his Garnett Street office, at a victory party said “I want all the men and women who worked with me to know that this Designer of the year trophy and the other prizes are as a result of your support and efforts too, and I’m happy that you are part of the Facts N Roses family.”
Speaking for those who worked in his camp, he said “they too should be respected, and while I can't pay them enough for their many day and nights of helping me get the work done, I’m believing that a day will come when companies will offer much more money so that they too can be even more encouraged.”

COSTUME CREATION AN EXPENSIVE UNDERTAKING

Rose lost his chance to take a third consecutive title last year when, as indicated, the major companies pulled out.
Some expressed to this reporter that they admired his work but described him as a bit excessive in terms of spending, to put out top class creations.
To this he said “If you compare the finished product of quality and craftsmanship employed, one may understand why the cost would seem expensive, but we only offer the best and the best is costly; material- and workmanship-wise”.
Both he and wife Michelle believe in ensuring “if we are going to create costumes or clothing it must be quality and durable to offer the best impression for our clients; that ripples to their clients, and also represents Guyanese quality at the international level.”
He believes the winning formula for copping the Designer of the year prize is “putting much time into planning and creating concepts then getting the right materials to get the job done, employing the right staff and working to schedules and deadlines to ultimately leave our clients satisfied and among the top brass at prize-giving time”.
Commending the other designers for their creations that added to the making Guyana’s 40th anniversary memorable, Rose said “when it comes to Mashramani my commitment remains to detail, aimed at showcasing that Guyana, too, has what it takes to have quality costumes like at any of the major carnivals”.
The youth who believes that he was destined to be a designer said “I don’t believe that I’m lord of all in costume creations because I’ve won a few prizes, but I do believe that my work offers other designers a benchmark of standards that they should strive for and also surpass in the interest of making Mashramani as colourful, mesmerising and as glamorous as Carnivals around the world”.
He also opined that companies should not wait until the last minute to decide on their participation as it puts a tremendous strain on designers to provide quality and quantity.
“Yes we do aim to make a profit as any business person would, but my camp ensures that the viewing public is mesmerised to the point of talking. Hence the company and the event scenes are taken by word of mouth and through photos, internationally, long after the event is passed, which ultimately means that the festival gets more marketing for the quality and standards offered and Guyana will win in time to come,” Rose stated
Rose's commitment to the designer’s job is permanent to the point that his camp will begin planning possible proposals for Mash 2011 to better the creations of this year and improve on the colour and opulence.
“We hope that businesses will be looking for quality and will not be trading it in for mediocrity because Mash is we ting and we ting needs to get to the level of attracting tourists to come and be part of our festival like they do for carnival”.
He first won the designer of the year title in 2007 with the Digicel band when he created a “Firestorm” and continued in 2008 with Odyssey for Digicel.
Last year, Rose designed for the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, presenting the ‘Lost city of El Dorado’ as well as for the Ministry of Tourism, the Tourism Authority and the National Library.
Rose has been designing costumes since 1994 with Astro-Arts in the John Fernandes Mash camp. He then branched off on his own in 2006 creating the winning formula for Banks DIH. That year he got Best King costume, Best Full costume large band, Best commercial float, band of the year.
This year, too, Rose also created the winning individual costume for his daughter Shanice Rose who won the first prize for the Georgetown leg of the Children’s costume competition.
In 2006, Rose and his wife were the official designers for the Jamaica Carnival creating 1500 costumes for the road. He has also designed many winning costumes for pageants such as Miss Jamzone, Miss Guyana World and Miss Guyana Universe.

Guyana Artistic Music Awards set for Sunday April 25th 2010!

While there is no sure word on whether Guyana will be having an Accolade Music Awards of Guyana this year -- it looks like an international group is set to honour stake holders in the industry shortly.

For the first time in its short history, on Sunday April 25, the Guyana Artistic Music Awards (GAMA) is set to be staged at the National Cultural Centre to honour not just locally based artistes but Guyanese entertainers from 14 territories in the Diaspora.

The promoter is the ‘Guyanese Canadian Artistic Enterprise’ company based in Toronto Canada and is headed by promoter Sherlock Shepherd. Working alongside is co founders Randolph Waterman CEO of “Randolph’s Building & Renovation Company”, Elton Joseph CEO of “Nortel Upholstery” and Andrew Francis CEO of "Ark Plumbing Inc.”

GCAE has promoted annual boat rides, concerts and dances during the Caribana Celebrations every summer since 2002. The company also promotes various events during the year featuring Guyanese and other Artists from Canada and around the world.

The last GAMA was staged in Toronto Canada in 2008. It was organised by GCAE in collaboration with “Massive Bunch Entertainment”.

It is being staged in Guyana this time around because the promoters have expressed the belief that Guyanese music has made commendable strides.

The Guyana Artistic Music Awards (GAMA) of Canada is an annual community event created to promote and recognize Guyanese talent internationally. It will feature 29 Guyanese acts spanning 14 countries on stage entertaining. Some of the lot will receiving awards in various categories.

Among those listed to be honoured are Lionel Abel, Mark Bryan, Otis Holder, Dave Martins, Sammy Baksh, Sash Persaud, Tony Ricardo, Ivor Lynch, Kenny Lawrence, Phil ‘Bumpy’ Dino and Patrick ‘Patto’ Gonsalves.

Originally, the event was to have been two-fold but Shepherd said that after discussions with senior authorities locally, he was advised not to stage two back to back shows. The other is the Guyana Reggae Sunsplash.

“We are aiming to create a product that can become a marketing tool for the tourism industry while aiding in creating a Guyanese cultural identity that is on par with the international musical requirements, Shepherd said.

The promoter is of the belief that the awards to be staged annually would encourage artistes to up their game and work towards bettering their musical and entertainment offerings.

That Sunsplash is carded for April 17 as a prelude to the awards so that locals can experience live performances from Guyanese musicians who are doing their thing for Guyana in other countries.
The GUYANA REGGAE SUNSPLASH is carded for the NATIONAL PARK.

Some of the nominees resident in Guyana include Shelly G, Tennicia Defreitas, Jumo, Adrian Dutchin, Timeka Marshall, Mariam Williams, Jory Hector, Melissa Vanilla Roberts, Bones Man, Kester D, JB, Big Red, Alabama, Cid Hooper, Young Bill Rogers, and Cliff Davis. The nominees residing in France include Ras McBean and Colin I and the England based artistes include Joe Tex.

The Jamaican based nominees are Imykal, Fire Juice and Major Joe B, while the USA artistes include Zebulan, Kapa Shanti, Prakz, H20, Redemption and Yonette Hooper. From Canada the nominees include Telescope, Donna Makeda, Prince Ally, Cyborg, Mandela and Daddy Rusty.

There is also an editor’s award that will cover the media for best print, television, radio and Internet personalities.

The organisers say they will be consulting with the Ministries of Culture and Tourism to endorse the Awards and to get the relevant support.

Local sponsors listed for the event thus far include Carib Beer, Wireless Connections; White Castle Fish Shop, FCE Systems; American Exchange Barbers, Colours, Lenscraft optical, Aubrey James Video productions amongst others.

They are awaiting confirmation from the telephone service providers of Guyana among other corporate entities.

According to Shepherd the local event will be a Red Carpet affair at the National Cultural Centre with a Cocktail Event to follow. The list of artistes that number more than 15 for honorary awards will be announced later but this publication understands that Barbados based international artistes Eddy Grant will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award wile Jamaica based Natural Black should take home the International Music Ambassador Award.

Why GAMA?

When asked why such an event given that Guyana has its Accolade awards the organisers said the GAMA of Canada started around the same time that the Accolade Awards started without any prior knowledge about the Accolade Awards.

GAMA was created after the President and other members of GCAE realized that many Guyanese artists living abroad had made tremendous strides in the Entertainment Industry and so decided to create this event to award and honour these artistes. The difference with the GAMA of Canada and the Accolade Awards is that GAMA honours Guyanese artistes worldwide while the Accolade Awards only honours mostly Guyanese artistes in Guyana.

“After presenting the first GAMA in Toronto Canada, we realized that we were only connecting with Guyanese artistes in Canada and USA, when there were Guyanese artistes all over the world in many different countries making their mark on the Entertainment scene and so we decided to include Guyanese artistes from other countries”.

The GCAE decided that Guyana was the fittest place to stage the present Awards show because it is strictly a Guyanese Awards show and they wanted to honour not only the Guyanese artistes living abroad but also those living in Guyana. “We know that everyone cannot travel to Canada and hence the decision to stage the event in Guyana was decided upon.

Some of the international sponsors are ARK'S plumbing Inc, De Castro & De Castro Construction Co, Channaman’s Restaurant, First-Class Printing, Calypso Hut, Tennessee International, Freight Inc, All Natural Beauty Supply Product, Randolph Cuilding and Construction and Titan Tours Airlines.

Exclusive Behind the Scenes Photos of Timeka's New Music Video for "One More Day"

As she continues her quest to take her talent to the international music mainstream Timeka Marshall, age 21 is back home for a short spell from the Land of wood and reggae and is not wasting time.

After releasing the inspirational ‘One more day’ single late last year Marshall shot her first locally produced video to add to her four hot singles.

She has also done cameo performances in Peter Morgan’s Golden brown and Peter Ram’s tight videos.

This video will be her fifth in addition to the hits ‘All night’, ‘Hush,’ Feel fah’ and ‘Separate.”

Timeka said, “This song is inspirational and goes beyond the regular communication with the creator where you move beyond asking for money and riches and goes into the very important ‘one more day.’

She said, “In life we often pray for success, money and riches and forget that you only need to ask for health and strength and spiritual direction”.

The song, she says, was written after her friend’s mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
I put myself in her shoes and from watching her battle for life I have even more appreciation for the things we take for granted.

She said, “Sometimes when people are going through tough times all they can ask God for is one more day”.
