FIGHTING IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

Recently, there has been a furor in the local music industry which has its birth in a song sung by Jory against Ian Johnson. So much so that all sorts of wild and in some cases unfounded rumours are taking feet and crawling about like a sick pestilence in our country! Some of the rumours range from people being beaten by opposing musicians to a US visa being revoked!

And we have also seen, the rebuttal of Jory’s piece by other artistes – which – quite frankly is doing more harm than good to the volatile and embryonic music industry which we claim to have here.

We at GSB, having opted for the freedom of expression that pervades this industry internationally had posted here the issue of Jory’s song and Mr. Johnson’s reaction. At this time however we will remove all such posts whatz-hott-023[4]and encourage others to do likewise in a spirit of goodwill to make local music worthwhile once more.

We say to both factions to desist from the lewd and vulgar manner in which you air your differences and to remind you that in some way – however small – you are a role model to others and such behavior is unbecoming of people who desire respect!

Jory, you are a talented youth who can channel these talents in a more positive way which will help you to get ahead in this business. Don’t let people who are not putting money in your pocket encourage you to make them laugh at others, at your own expense.

Ian, your response to this situation is shocking but we believe you can do better in mending the fences. After all, the real competition is not here in Guyana, but trying to get an artist on the international scene. Channel your energies thus!

Together we can work to make Guyana a place to reckon with in terms of positive vibes in the music industry and GSB will always support such initiatives. Let’s put friviality behind us and make local music work!

Jay-Z On Top Of US Charts Alongside The Beatles..

With all of the money being lost in music these days and some folks right here in Guyana trying to run down each other it is rare that an iconic rapper like Jay-Z can still create enough hype to be successful and be in the same line as the Beatles.

It’s all about the Beatles and Jay-Z this week on Billboard’s albums charts. Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3″ shifted 476,000 copies in the week that ended at the close of business on Sunday (Sept. 13) night. That will easily give Jay his 11th No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart when the new figures are released in the morning on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

As for the Beatles, preliminary figures indicate the Fab Four’s catalog of albums — including those titles not part of its new reissue series — sold a combined 626,000 units in the U.S. last week according to SoundScan. Christopher Martin will be in Guyana to perform in the National Park on the 26th of September 2009! GSB.com goes a little deeper into the life of this talented Jamaican Artiste.
A star has risen. Christopher Martin, the talented singer/performer from Back Pasture in St. Catherine who shot to instant fame and recognition shortly after winning the coveted Digicel Rising Stars title in 2005, is fast becoming one of the most sought after performers on the Jamaican music landscape.

With a slate of singles permeating radio and the Jamaican music charts including Giving It and Jamaican Girls, Christopher created history when he became the first Digicel Rising Stars alumni to score a hit single on any chart in Jamaica.

‘It has been a wonderful journey so far, filled with new and promising encounters. It is also challenging but I love what I am doing, so it makes that much easier’, Christopher remarked when asked about the journey from being an unknown to a popular personality.

Christopher’s growth as an artiste and an individual ever since he shot onto the scene in 2005 is quite evident. His vocal chops have improved drastically, he is now under the guidance of the Big Yard label which is one of the most prolific musical entities in Jamaica, and he has gained a lot of respect from his peers.
‘I’ve grown tremendously and I am more confident in my performance. My voice also seems more richer and I know exactly what it is I am capable of. I think I have gained the respect from others, due to the amount of work that I have been putting in’, said Martin.

Martin was born on Valentine’s Day in 1987 to parents Cleveland and Maxine Martin. He attended the Watermount All-Age School and later the St. Jago High School. It was during his high school years that his love for the dramatic arts and sports developed. He participated in various sporting activities including football and he even participated in the School’s Drama Festival where he was awarded the best actor award in 2003. That same year he was named Mr. St. Jago High and he also earned the sectional prize for Most Talented.

Additionally, Martin has won numerous awards for singing, throughout his high school years. In 2005, he was awarded the Gold Medal in the Jamaica National Skills competition in singing.

Christopher graduated from St. Jago High school in 2003. After winning the Digicel Rising Stars competition, Martin participated in Digicel’s Christmas promotions in 2005. His debut single Love is all We Need formed part of the promotional campaign.

Martin’s subsequent releases included Conscience, Christmas in Jamdown featuring the Katalys Crew, My Love for You, Take My Wings, Tonight, Giving It, and Jamaican Girls. He has worked with a number of top producers in the reggae/dancehall arena including Robert Livingston (Big Yard), Arif Cooper, Shane Brown and Christopher Birch.

He has performed on a number of stage shows, events, functions and entertainment events across Jamaica and even overseas. One of his major accomplishments in 2006 was signing a contract with Blue Cross of Jamaica. He will make appearances on the behalf of the company until June 2006. Martin’s parents have been the source of his motivation to pursue his musical ambitions. ‘My parents and my peers at school really motivated me. They always said that I would be a star’, he said. He said his main objective is to bring the music and his interpretation of the music to farther heights. ‘I want every household across the world to know and love my music and where I come from’, Martin added.

Martin is presently studying Business Management and Accounting at the University of Technology (UTECH) in Jamaica. His lifelong goal is to become an entrepreneur.

Martin lists singing, reading, socializing and baking among his hobbies. His website which can be seen by logging on to www.chrismartin.com.jm is up and running. His fans can interact with him via that medium. Very soon, a fan club will be officially launched where fans can get closer to him.

Houston to Winfrey: Brown was emotionally abusive

(Associated Press) Whitney Houston says ex-husband Bobby Brown was emotionally abusive during their marriage and at one point spit on her.

After a long absence from music, Houston is staging a career comeback with a new album last month and a two-part appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

On Monday, Houston told Winfrey that Brown wasn't physically abusive but that "he slapped me once but he got hit on the head three times by me." The 46-year-old singer says she "was horrified he spit on me, in my face" and that left her "very hurt, very angry."

Houston says she was attracted to Brown because he had control in their relationship.
Houston is one of the best-selling artists of all time, but her career stalled as she grappled with drug problems and a troubled marriage to Brown.

Kanye West Has Truly Lost It This Time

You know that saying, it takes a village to raise a child?
Apparently, Kanye's village has failed him. He obviously doesn't have a real friend in the world. There does not appear to be anyone who can get through to him, to make him understand that he needs to curb his obnoxious behavior.

I thought it was a joke when Kanye showed up on the MTV Video Music Awards stage next to Taylor Swift, right in the middle of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me." It was the first Moon Man for the 19-year-old country starlet, who has become an equally huge star in the pop world.
Click here to watch Kanye's outburst.

"I always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these one day," Taylor said with surprise. "I never thought it would happen."

As Taylor continued, Kanye interrupted, saying he thought Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video was wrongly overlooked. "Hey Taylor, I'm really happy for you, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

Taylor looked humiliated. I felt humiliated for her. The audience booed him, and gave her a standing ovation.
I didn't expect Taylor to win that award, and I'm not upset about Kanye's opinion. However, bum-rushing the stage wasn't the appropriate time and place to express his disagreement.

Not only was Kanye's approach disrespectful, it was especially disrespectful because it was directed towards a woman--a teenage girl, actually. Taylor won't turn 20 until December. I can only imagine how her father feels. I'm sure he would like to have a talk to Kanye. I'm not related to her, and I'd like to have a talk with him

If Kanye wants people to win the awards he thinks they deserve, he should create his own event. He should name it after his website, KanyeUniversecity.com, and webcast it.

Kanye is a guest at the MTV Video Music Awards. He does not determine the winners. The winners are determined by popular vote. Furthermore, aside from the fact that Taylor Swift is a top-selling artist, who has revolutionized teen country pop, she did not have any competition in this category as her competitors Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Pink, and Kelly Clarkson split the pop vote. Taylor had to get 100 percent of the country vote, plus some of the pop vote as well.

It's simple math that even a "College Dropout" should be able to figure out.

Ironically, a MTV writer joked that Kanye's rant was an indication that he might be inebriated. "Kanye West ruins Taylor Swift's big moment," the MTV.com editor wrote. "Further proof that he's on the Hennessy. In my humble opinion, that is."

MTV also reported that Perez Hilton and Hayley Williams started a #TeamTaylor trend on Twitter.

Pink tweeted about her annoyance with Kanye. "Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh-t on earth. Quote me," she wrote. "My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl, and deserved her moment. She should know we all love her."

Kanye has previously made award show rants about Gretchen Wilson, Justice and Simian, as well as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, but this was the worst.

I give credit to Taylor. She handled it gracefully. The audience countered him by giving her a standing ovation, and booed Kanye throughout the night whenever his name was mentioned.

Taylor performed "You Belong With Me" live just minutes later. I watched, wondering if she would feel flustered, and if it would show in her performance. But it didn't.

I think she channeled that negative energy into a positive. Good for her.

Fortunately, Taylor got another chance to complete her acceptance speech. When Beyonce accepted the Best Video Award for "Single Ladies," she invited Taylor back on stage.

"Wow, this is amazing," Beyonce said when receiving her award. "I remember being 17-years-old and up for my first MTV award with Destiny's Child. It was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment."

Taylor then joined Beyonce on stage and recited her acceptance speech, only making a subtle reference to the incident. Before rattling off her special thanks, she said, "Maybe we can try this again."

After the awards, Kanye posted an apology to Taylor on his website, KanyeUniversecity.com. "I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM," Kanye wrote on his site, AP reported. "I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

Still, MTV should have thrown Kanye out of the event. Had any other heckler had the audacity to interrupt the broadcast, they would have been thrown out and probably charged. He should not be treated any differently.

This dude needs help.

He is also optimistic that “it (the awards) will grow very big and will definitely help the stakeholders in the industry. He opined that having an award will always be something of honour and boasted that I know I can always say I was among the first to ever get an award so ill always have mines in my heart along with everything else I have received in my career.”

Adrian on Mash etal

He says he’s about to work on some new tracks in Guyana, Barbados and the USA and is also thinking of Mash plans for 2010.

Fired Reporter Update!

smash_sml Word on the street peeps, is that a most unfortunate incident occurred to a certain reporter we told you about who was fired from one of the popular news outlets, thereby adding more trouble and woes to his (sic) already troubled life.

The car he was renting recently recieved a smashed windscreen on the way to the Soca Fete for Jamzone. No, it was not by a mischievous thief or prankster! Wanna know now eh?

Well I'll tell it like I saw it and not a word more cos these ppl ent paying me for this! lol

So he was going to the Machel & HD Show and his (living together) partner was in the car with him and some other friends when he stopped to pick up a kid who he promised to carry to the show.

Apparently his partner suspected that this kid was more than a friend and promptly said that (s)he was not going to allow so many people to ride in the car (word is that the partner pays half of the daily rental fee for the car). Well our goodly reporter friend promptly replied that the partner could come out and take another taxi!

We at the end screamed 'Go Girl' as the now vexed partner simply exited the car and picked up a very large stone which she flung with all her/his might into the windscreen then calmly walked away.

Said her/his good friend to us a few days after: 'She/he did that because they were tired of all the cheating and sleepless nights and the mental abuse! It's not only Varshnie could talk about abuse. I suffer it too! And God knows I felt happy!"

Wow! More power to you 'Partner'!

Last word: Our reporter friend is desperately seeking a job so that he can take care of the expenses of the broken windscreen now that they're not a monthly salaried worker.

Cathedral or Sheriff Street anyone?!!!!!

Later.

One of our viewers requested that we add this little song!

It’s War! Ian Johnson vs. Jory Hector!

Jory at the 2k9 Watt's Hot Show Those of you who didn’t attend the Reggae/Dancehall Night of Jamzone missed a whole lot! Vegas, Barbie and Busy Signal just to name a few. But it was our local singer Jory who had the National Stadium in a frenzy with hits such as ‘Last Bad Boy’ and ‘Rape Man Gone a Jail Now’. But it was his scorching lyrics towards Mr. Dynamix at the opening of the show that stole the show.

The song entitled “Mr Limpy” was targeted at Ian Johnson aka Mr. Dynamix, who Jory claimed had robbed him at the Watt’s Hott Guyana Show. He started by saying “Biggup Shelly G” giving much respect to the songstress before going straight for Mr. Dynamix’s throat with his lyrics!

The crowd was in an uproar as Jory sang “Mr Limpy” along with his antics demonstrating how Mr. Limpy walks and described how he robbed him at the Watt’s Hott Show!m_40b52c8ddcc17f99bccc0bb9a7596e2e

It was last evening that Mr. Dynamix seemingly very upset hit back at Jory on his Watt’s Hot call-in programme trying to set the record straight on what really went down.

Mr Dynamix claimed that Jory wants to make him out to be a thief and tarnish his reputation. “Im not a thief… Jory want to make me out to be a thief”. He also said “Jory you need to repent… I would never say God send me to ridicule another man… you all need to pray for Jory”. He also said to Kester D if singing the 1st Mr. Limpy is going to make Swansea money then go right ahead.

He also went on to say that Jory was wrong in claiming that he took the Watt’s Hott Guyana show’s funds to support Shelly G’s newborn and claimed that the money Shelly G makes can mind himself, Kester D and Jory combined and that whenever they meet up he actually gets a raise from Shelly G. “She’s not a $10,000 artiste and she doesn’t need Watt’s Hott money to mind baby nor the Watt’s Hott money cant afford to buy gas for my old car.”

Mr Dynamix also claims that Jory is trying to get rid of him and does not want him apart of promoting entertainment in Guyana, but allow it to change hands to people that don’t have the Entertainment business at heart. Is he trying to say Hits and Jams? You decide.

He made mention that Kester D tried to clear up the whole situation, but side tracked from the truth. He also claimed that Kester D said he did not back him up in the war between himself and HJTV. “Kester you’re a man of integrity… I know your pastor”. “Kester D want all the credit for Guyanese music on radio and television… you can have it, but don’t say I didn’t do anything” he also said.

Johnson said that the artiste Jory should not have complained about payment of funds because of the amount of expenses each event would have namely, payment to the bands, renting of venues, and cost of instruments, and claimed that Jory is not the only person whose money was short, but other people who went the extra mile with him moneys were short as well.

Ian Johnson said he also had previous war of words with Gordon Mosely, Mondale Smith and HJTV and that he already asked for forgiveness and he doesn’t want war nor have his name in war. “I hit Mosely in he face and he hit me back in me face… I start with Mondale he run and write up he articles in the paper, but we are still friends. I know im not a peach”. He certainly isn’t.

Mr. Dynamix claims that the “war of contemption” actually started back in late 2005 at the Talent Exclusive Show when he had sponsored Shelly G (then Shelly Belly) and Nigel of Carib invested in another artiste “Nikira”. What is she doing in terms of music now by the way, anyone knows?

He said Nikara went on to win that competition, but he stuck with Shelly G after realising her potential with the song “Touch Meh”. Shelly went on to place second in the 2006 Soca Monarch. He said he does not regret sponsoring Shelly G and refuse to invest millions in artiste development only to get kicked in the butt later.

He says he doesn’t care about anyone who says he favoured Shelly G over any other artiste. “Im a birds man I don’t deal with nothing different, all you folks who have people of different orientation I don’t deal with nothing funny, I’m straight mandingo!”

'Love Sex and the Tax Man' at the National Cultural Centre September 5 to 7

If your one who just can't get enough of those dramatic plays and love to have a good laugh then here's your opportunity to have a belly full of laugh.

As the Dramatic Arts Academy will be staging the hilarious family comedy “Love, Sex and the Taxman” from Saturday-Monday at the National Cultural Centre.

The play which is written by William Van Zandt and Jane Milmore, shows of one of the many things people around the world can and will do, to avoid paying their taxes. The ploy conceived to avoid such payment as explored in the play, presents an energy-filled farcical rendezvous with the tax authority. It’s unbelievable the extent some will go to avoid or reduce such mandatory payments.

It centres around two college students, one of whom is duped into the attempt to defraud the tax department. This attempt leads to numerous twists and turns in this hilarious play; twists and turns in their own personal life. It also shows what real friends will do for each other.

A meticulous Taxman, a nosey landlord, an unsuspecting mother, two girlfriends and a shady marriage officer help to intricately weave this ambitious daunting task of cheating the Tax Department.

It is directed by veteran actress Desiree Edghill who plays the mother of one of the college boys. The other members of the cast are, Henry Rodney, Michael Ignatius, Sheldon Braithwaite, Neaz Subhan, Nazim Hussain, Rushella Edmindson and Merica George.

In the play, Jon Trachtman, played by Sheldon Braithwaite, decided that he could cheat the Inland Revenue Department by changing his status to married.

On the forms he made a mistake and put “Male” for his wife’s sex instead of “Female” and the Inland Revenue Department decides to pay him a visit to investigate this.

Jon then asks his roommate Leslie Arthur, played by Michael Ignatius, to become his wife for the benefit of the Tax Man. Jon’s mother, Mrs. Vivian Trachtman, played by Desiree Edghill, upon hearing about the wedding, turns up to find that Leslie is not a Girl as she originally thought.

Her reaction is left to the imagination and according to The tax Man,” I have never seen anyone go to such complicated lengths before!”

The others in the play are: Neaz Subhan as the Tax Man Floyd Spinner; Henry Rodney as the landlord; Rushella Edmondson as Jon’s girlfriend Kate Dennis; Merica George as Connie; and Nazim Hussain as the Justice of Peace Arnold Grunion.

Tickets are on sale at the National Cultural Center and cost $500.00, $700.00 and $1000.00
