IOC to investigate Canadian Women's Hockey Team

Well after a big win what would you do not celebrate?, It's funny that we came across this report this morning claiming that the Canadian women's team are being investigated after their last game at the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee will investigate the actions of Canadian women's hockey players who celebrated their gold medal victory Thursday night by swigging beer and smoking cigars on the ice in Vancouver.

A number of players, including 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, were drinking alcohol on the ice following the team's 2-0 defeat of the United States. (The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19.) Players lingered for more than 70 minutes after the awards ceremony reveling in the arena, which was empty except for media and arena staff. (Click here to view a slideshow of the celebration.)

Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said that drinking in public was "not what we want to see" from athletes at an Olympic venue. The organization will investigate the actions and will speak with the international hockey federation and Canadian Olympic Committee and ask them to "act accordingly."

Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, told the Associated Press, “We condone celebrations. … We don’t condone actions of irresponsibility. I think Canadians understand it’s quite an emotional moment for our team. It was not our intention to go against any IOC protocols.”

To be sure, the Canadian women's hockey team should have acted with more class and been a little more discreet with its celebration. But to do something drastic like ban the team from the Closing Ceremony or force them out of the Olympic Village would be an overreaction. In past Olympics we've seen steroids, political boycotts, cheating and judging scandals. A few puffs of a cigar hardly seems to be in the same league.

Introducing : Talk Style Fashion Club.

"Clothes maketh man, naked people have little or no effect on society" Cleverly stated by Mark Twain, the importance of clothes and by default a sense of fashion has for too long been understated. From bell bottoms, to boot-cuts, to pencils and maybe back? Fashion is ever changing, always evolving in this rapidly stylistic world. Keeping up with it may not be a walk in the park but more like a guy finishing last in a road race.
Some may argue that what’s in style depends on what the celebrities wear, while others may opine that fashion is following your personal sense of style While this may be true, there are a few who may showcase their own true style.

Guyana has been making its mark in the Fashion Industry over the past few years. Guyanese designers have awed many audiences with their unique and fabulous sense of designs and concepts. The most popular names in Guyanese and Caribbean fashion are Sonia Noel and Michelle Cole, while others like Olympia Small and Roger Gary have also caused a few ripples of their own.

Two of these designers, Michelle Cole and Sonia Noel have made an indelible mark on fashion in Guyana and are mothers to two of the most anticipated fashion events in Guyana. Michelle has offered to us an innovative and sassy venture called FACTS which seeks to showcase and reward the talent and creativity of young designers, which has completed three cycles to date. Sonia meanwhile has brought to Guyana, undoubtedly our biggest fashion event, Guyana Fashion Weekend.

Marisca Fiedtkou, daughter of Sonia Noel, who is no stranger to the fashion industry herself, is keen to follow her mother's progressive footsteps and carve a name for herself in the fashion book of fame.

Talk Style Fashion Club is the brain child of Marisca. This project was started as an interactive club geared for the young and hip. With monthly meetings, it allows young ladies to get together and share their views and discover their personal style

Being a member of this club offers a variety of benefits; with membership you get 10% discount on anything you purchase from the Talk Style Fashion Club section at “Silhouettes”, which is located at 176 Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown. Members also have access to personalized shopping, updates on the latest looks and trends so that you will always be in fashion, no matter which direction your sense of may lead. It also allows, facilitates and encourages making new friends through networking, image and self esteem building and much more.

Wondering how you may join the Talk Style Fashion Club? At the meetings, registration forms are distributed. Membership costs GY$1000 per month, which is only GY$10,000 per year.

The Club has held one meeting for the year to date, which focused extensively on personal style. Fashion magazines were distributed and members were educated about celebrity styles and the roles they play in society. Session two, is dated for Saturday 27th February 2009 at 13:00hrs. The venue would be 1068 Aubrey Barker and Gaulding, South Ruimvelt. Session two focuses on “make up” tips and Easter attire. Further interaction and networking continue while persons from the first meeting are allowed to bring a friend along.

Trouble in the Gaza? Jahvinci, Rhyno plans to leave the Portmore Empire!

l_ffa65cee92267f419e93710c4b2847a6 News has surfaced that Portmore Empire young guns, Jahvinci and Black Rhyno have made plans to move on and are perhaps even now doing their exit interview with the Gaza President, Vybz Kartel.

This follows hard on the heels of the departure of Gaza Princesses Lisa Hype and Kim, reducing the number of princesses to two.

Despite denials, the rumours of beatings on the Gaza have persisted and these beatings are not just confined to the females in the group — the males also have reportedly been routinely disciplend physically. In the case of Kim, it was documented that she was kicked and boxed by clownies allegedly associated to Kartel.

Of course, the stories have been denied by Gaza sources who say the stories are pure fabrication by persons who are hellbent on mashing up the Gaza and the Portmore Empire, and feel that the departure of Rhyno and Jahvinci would definitely do that.blackryno-01

Black Rhyno, who is most known for his track Bike Back on Russian’s Strip Club Riddim, and Jahvinci, who is currently experiencing good on-air rotation with the track, Babygirl I’m Alone, are said to be the Empire’s biggest money makers, outside of Kartel himself, and the rumours have indicated that the decision to part ways is rooted in financial disagreements.

Bones Man is Soca Monarch 2010!

100_0813

While Shelly G’s no show to defend her title proved a disappointment to some none can complain about the 2010 choice for Soca monarch. Before a celebratory crowd Orlando ‘Bones man’ Johashen age 24 a Berbician of Tempe Village and a worker at Forestry was adjudged the 2010 soca monarch.

The artistes who copped the crown from a line up nine was true to his Guyanese roots and proudly sang with support from eth crowd “ I don't care what no body say Mashramani time is we own... woi see we jumping...” From the time he began his performance to his conclusion the crowd was on fire for him and he did not disappoint with lyrical delivery like that of Trinidad soca sensation Bunji Garlin, the father of one was a burst of energy an hype that left the crowd shouting Bones man...we want bones man long after he exited the stage.

One woman who is an obvious soca crazy fan at the show’s end was heard telling other “I’m disappointed that Shelly G did not show up but Bones Man deserved it.”

Appearing as the penultimate artiste the artiste who won the best new comer prize three years ago on Saturday night offered a performance that included fireworks and the crowd is with him. The crowd liked him and his energy was great. Unique in his delivery he wore a straw skirt instead of pants under a large white coat. Amidst performing he shouted “ya’ll want to see the real bones man’. As the crowd shouted in the positive he stripped himself of the coat the crowd s went into a frenzy declaring him the clear winner. He used the X-factor dancers who added to his energy and they were supported off stage by several mocha jumbies (stilts walkers).

Tomeka Thomas the pregnant lady was first up singing about her balloon. She appeared as a queen and her backup dancers were a bunch of fully pregnant (imitations) women dressed in leotards prancing around the stage showcasing their balloons proudly. It was her second shot at the crown and this year she was inspired by last year’s Trinidad soca monarch Fay-Ann Lyons. Though being eight months pregnant she took some serious risks to prove that she was fit. However it must have been an error on the part of the emcee to have not announced that she once resided in the islands and this possibly worked against her as her accent was obviously not Guyanese. But both her and her baby proved entertaining as she imitated her soca inspiration in attitude and singing.teh crowd was moved to laughter as she announced that comedian chow pow was her baby father. The audience was unsure of how to react when she executed a split to conclude her presentation.

B52 the fire man was up next with ‘wecarrying on’ and his was a performance that featured fire works flying and the flames throwers on and off stage as well as on the stage roof. He donned a white suit lined with trimmings of the flag and was backed by dancers dressed in red and yellow outfits. Something about the microphone sound was not as clear and caused him to literally strain his vocals in delivery. Hs like at least three others including the winner included the predictable s ‘somebody missing’ chant but the crowd did show him some love. His presentation included the crowd chanting carry back the people thing.

Lady B’ (Barbra) was introduced next and she appeared wearing a Guyana flag mo hawk. Her’s was delivery that stated that she ‘want a man who could lift me up’. That song sounded very familiar. Her backups included dancers who were good but they needed better costumes. Some dubbed her a good filler but were saying when she exited eth stage that “she should go home now”.

Back wine time was probably the energy saver to the first half of the competitors as Beverly using dance fanatics for back up delivered a scorching performance that proved that age ain’t anything but a number. She sounded really nice and professionally so too while using the stage well. The crowd certainly enjoyed her serving of back wine time that made many exclaim that “granny could entertain and wine.” That was the performance to beat in the first half of the show.

Guyana born Jamaica based artistes Piere Da Silva was next up and he came with much energy for his ‘mad, mad, mad’ song. With sponsorship from Bill express he and his dancers’ donned doctors’ jackets and were full of energy but he somehow did not connect with the audience as he could have. It was obvious that the crowd couldn’t decide if they should support him or not as for the most part his delivery was so full of words that it was hard to understand what he was singing but the musical accompaniment was high energy. His locks were full of sparkles and he too delivered the over played somebody missing chant which evoked the usual crowd response as he paraded all over the stage.

Material things done by De cruz who resides in Trinidad was a fairly delivered groovy soca with dancers who appeared on a mini SUV imitating lady Gaga. But the song also bordered on dance hall. Then a Brazilian lady whom he described as European came and offered some supposed exotic dancing before he ordered her off the stage because she offered him a large chain. Then came is dispersal of monopoly money in crowd followed by him relieving himself of his shirt to reveal a Guyana flag on a some what chiseled body and while some enjoyed his delivery many did not find him impressive enough. However he got the judges’ nod for the best new comer prize. His performance included a local stele pan player being invited to eth stage to play parts of his song before he got back into the singing grove.

Former reporter turn singer Jackie Handover was a great act that presented “festival time” with a good voice while some said they saw a whole lot of Charmaine Blackman in her delivery. She's wore a two piece red short pants suit. But while she was energetic she failed when she tried to interact with the audience by stating that Trinidad has crop over and Barbados has Carnival. She has a few jitters and sounds like charmaine Blackman. With work some believe that she will be a force to be reckoned with in future competitions.

Vanilla offered an electric performance that encouraged patrons to get ‘High’. Her presentation included mocha jumbies and dancers as well as body builders. She's was dressed in a red jacket and a gold short pants. She was backed by dancers from the national dance school sporting colours of the flag. Amidst her performance there were several explosions of confetti and fire works and she tore off her jacket to reveal a body hugging black and gold body suit. And eth fire works exploded even more as dancers dressed in carnival costumes arrived off stage on forklifts. And before long she too was on a fork lift with support from a gyrating body builder. But try as she did she was again relegated to the second spot in the competition.

Some were loud in praises saying “big-up Bones Man, he work hard for it for real, now he just got to keep up the hype and energy that he got and big things could happen for he. But Vanilla was not my pick for second. I think that B52 had a far better song than hers, even Beverly and plenty other people including the groovy soca song Material Things. But the judges’ decision is final. "

Children’s Road Parade offers Colourful, Tropical Spectacle

Sparkly, colourful, torpical, relevant and cute were among the words used to describe the unfolding yesterday when the nation’s tots, teens and young adults from the eleven education districts took to the streets of Georgetown for the 2010 children’s Mashramani Road parade.

The conclusion of the Ministry of Education’s Unit of Allied Arts Children’s Mashramani competition was a showcase of pageantry and fun filled gyrations, prancing and dancing as they addressed issues of climate change, the Low Carbon Development Strategy from the youth perspective and preserving marine life.
But above all the youth parade would not have been completed without, Mythical characters, legends and folklore as well as fantasy and fairy tales galore and there was an abundance of those too while others were serious about Rain forest preservation and education.

From about 9:00hrs thousands lined the parade route to get a glimpse of the many contingents of youths on parade in mostly full costumes. Some cheered their favourites on while others zeroed in on those who were a brazen and bold in their gyrations. Among those watching the jollification from the road side were some youngsters who were not going to be left out of the spot light. Some aged as young as three literally ran into the many groups of frenzied revellers and show them just how they should dance and do their thing.

In the nursery band from a line up of nine contingents the beauty of El Dorado was among the more attractive of showcases as was the legend of Gold but the energetic Miss Republic was also one to beat. For the most part the youths were very much in time with the music but few opted out as sleep seemed to have a greater pull on them.

In the primary band section more than eleven contingents were on the road and from the energy exuded it was obvious that the youths’ were out to have a grand time as reflected in their prancing and costumes. Ketley primary ‘s Back to basics was among the more energetic and colourful as was North Georgetown’s band that focused on living our Heritage in a diverse community. Commendation is also in order for Community Academy Primary for their ‘tribute to our first people.’

In the secondary school bands category the energy was at an all time high from the parade ground to the National Park as the more senior students seemed bent ton out doing each other with coordinated dance steps and gyrations. Theirs was a colourful array of glitters that had a few at their energetic peek. But there were a few who simply walked the course unmindful of the many promptings. All the entries in this category were commendable but some openly opined that Cummings Lodge and Dolphin secondary were the ones to bet with their themes of “Moulding our nation’s children to support our diverse heritage” and the fantasy filled “the Alien Red dragon and the Dragon Fly” costumes.

The regional presentations were among the more colourful and topical as the costumes offered much room for conversation on topical issues. These included region 2 ‘embracing our heritage through preservation of our natural resources.’ And West Demerara/ Essequibo Islands message was clear that it is ‘Celebration Time’ while region four aimed to ‘preserve our heritage and save the earth’ and region seven offered the message of ‘Celebrating our Diversity through education’.

Over all there were more than 40 contingents who also had their sections and there were also several Non governmental children’s organizations.
But none could out perform the choreographed showcase of the National Dance School as that group showcased the various levels of dance offered splashed with much of the many cultures that make Guyana a unique cultural melting pot. There were also some independent costumes showcased that were created by designers including Jermaine Broomes.

In one of the youthful bands prince charming brought a way too big shoe that did not match Cinderella’s dress and she simply left the two step sisters to fight over it while she showed the judges that she is not that typical fairy tale character much to the amusement of some patrons.

Another memorable showcase was that of the Masacoura Man who from the bowels of the sea partied with one pirate who was not going to be out done while pulling her boat that shared the origins of our people.

For Discussion: Elton John Says Jesus Was A "Super-Intelligent Gay Man"

we have heard some crazy sh*t talk in our time but this right here as gots to be the most messed up yet. Super Mega-Star Elton John was recently quoted saying Jesus Christ must have been gay....

“Princess Diana, Gianni Versace, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, all dead. Two of them shot outside their houses. None of this would have happened if they hadn’t been famous. Fame attracts lunatics. I never had a bodyguard, ever, until Gianni died. I don’t like celebrity anymore.”

On Love and Drugs:

“Just about every relationship I ever had was involved with drugs. It never works. But I always had to be with someone, good or bad, otherwise I didn’t feel fulfilled. I’d lost the plot.”

On his addiction
:

For some people a gram of cocaine can last a month. Not me. I have to do the lot, and then I want more. At the end of the day, all it led to was heartache.”

Elton John’s take on Christianity:

I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you’re as good as dead.”

They Say: Beyonce May Finally Be ready For Kids

This wouldn't come as a shock to us but for some it may, according to some source's Beyonce maybe ready to be fruitful and shot out some kiddies sooner than later.

“She has everything in the world she has ever dreamed of — a great husband, tons of money and an amazing career — but the one thing she years for is a baby,” a friend tells In Touch.

White party-goers refused entry into Jay-Z’s Brit Awards after party!

A British News Paper recently reported that no white people were allowed to enter Jay-Z's after party after the Brit Awards held recently.

See story below:

Rapper Jay-Z has become embroiled in a nasty dispute in Great Britain involving allegations that security guards were selectively excluding people at his Brit Awards after-party based on their race.

The guards allegedly refused to admit white party-goers into the VIP area, while black attendees were admitted immediately without standing in line.

The party was chaotic as people tried to get inside the club and fights broke out. The scene got even uglier, when security guards at the doors to the VIP room allegedly refused to allow white people into the area, while letting black party-goers straight through, according to Britain’s Daily Star newspaper.

“I’ve been to countless showbiz bashes but never have I met meatheads like those at the Jay- Z [party],” wrote the Star’s music reporter Kim Dawson. “Jay-Z is a mega-star and yet it was clear white people were not welcome in his VIP area. While the red rope was lifted for black guests to breeze through, let’s just say it stayed down if your face didn’t fit,” she added. “I have never felt so intimidated. It left me feeling like a mauled dog.”

Black pop star Alesha Dixon, who attended the party, also expressed disgust at the chaotic scene. “My friends have been getting knocked about and no one seems to care. I need to get out of here,” she told the paper. “What a horrible end to the night. I was having a blast at my record label party and now the mood is soured. I wish I’d never come,” she said.

A rep for the rapper said the club handled the security, not the mega-star, while the club’s manager said management was unaware of any problems.

Melanie Fiona wins Jamaica EME Award, sorry Timeka there's always next year.

After being among the nominees for her first regional honour, Guyanese singer Timeka Marshall last week walked away without the award that would have dubbed her the best new female artiste at the Jamaica Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards EME. But Guyana can still boast of sealing it first awards at the Jamaica EME none-the-less through Melanie Fiona a Canadian-born to Guyanese parents but Guyana can be gratified that some one who prides her self in identifying with her roots Guyana can celebrate. She, along with India Arie, was bestowed with the International friend of Reggae Awards at the EME.

Melanie Fiona recently completed a tour with Kanye West and is fast becoming a talking point in the R&B music circuit.

Marshall lost the ‘Best New Female Artiste’ award to Lisa Hyper. She could not be reached for a comment but Kerwin Bollers, her local manager, said that her being nominated for the award was an honour and that she will remain steadfast in her quest in the land of wood and water to possibly be the breakout Guyanese artiste who wins a Grammy award.

Like many, she was nominated for the Guyana 2009 Accolade music awards and has at least two crystals to her name.

The songbird who hails from Linden was the lone Guyanese among eight Jamaican nominees at the EME for the ‘BEST NEW ARTIST FEMALE.

The award, according to the nominations criteria, is given to an artist whose overall impact during the eligibility year establishes her public identity.

Timeka, who was home in Guyana for a few weeks, has taken a well deserved break and has gone to Trinidad for carnival after recording several songs at the Vizion Sounds studios on some Jamaica produced rhythms.

Bollers said that she will be releasing a few songs in the next couple of weeks and will also commence filming for three new music videos in Guyana and several other Caribbean countries.

The prestigious Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards were staged on Thursday February 4, at the Gardens of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston. The other nominees in that category were Gaza Indu, Phyllisia, Raine Seville, Sophia Squire, Gaza Kim.

CN Sharma suffers heart complications, undergoes angioplasty at CHI!

20100217sharma Doctors at the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI) performed an angioplasty on Justice For All party leader CN Sharma yesterday after he complained of feeling unwell. He remains a patient at the institute and his condition is being monitored.

Resident interventional cardiologist at CHI, Dr Pratik Soni performed the operation and according to reports, Sharma had a drug-eluting stent inserted into his arteries. The non-surgical procedure lasted just over ten minutes and Sharma was said to be doing well.

Officials at CHI were tight-lipped on the procedure and would only say that a prominent individual was treated at the institute and remained a patient. However, sources close to the broadcaster confirmed that he went into the hospital yesterday after feeling unwell and a decision was subsequently taken to have the procedure done.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that Sharma’s relatives had weighed the decision to fly him out of the country for the operation, but later settled on the services offered by the local institute which is located in the compound of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Sharma’s family when contacted said they would speak publicly today. His procedure yesterday was reportedly the first ever done in the country because he had a second stent inserted.

This newspaper was told that the drug-eluting stent was fitted next to another stent which was previously inserted.

Coronary angioplasty is a procedure to widen and clean out blood vessels using balloon dilation or laser treatment, improving blood flow to the heart muscle. Patients are usually discharged from hospital within a day and recovery would take a few days.

However, patients are expected to stay on the medication for the period prescribed.

CHI introduced stenting in Guyana back in 2007 when three angioplasties were performed. The cost of the procedure varies depending on the number of stents a patient requires.

The stenting being done here is referred to as bare metal stenting and involves the insertion of a wire mesh tube during angioplasty to prop open an artery.

Last year CHI announced the inclusion of the resident interventional cardiologist on his team saying that Dr Soni would be available for emergency cardiac problems. With Dr Soni on board the institute said stenting if required would be possible within hours. Dr Soni has been practicing cardiology for the past 13 years and is currently a Senior Consultant of interventional cardiology.

Well GSB.com staffers found her for yall just next in Brazil and by the looks of it, it seems Paris had a few drinks.

While promoting the Brazilian beer Devassa, Paris Hilton took a break from her recently under the radar behavior and picked up right where she left off on the party scene. While at a nightclub with a beer in hand, Paris began to provocatively dance around, even getting on all fours at one point.

The crowd, nor her baseball beau of a year Doug Reinhardt , seemed to mind the show. See more photos of the one night out with Paris after the jump.

Who is Anthony B?

Draped in the rich colours of African cloth, his trademark staff in hand, and his dreadlocks wrapped regally on his head, Anthony B embodies all that it is spiritual and proactive about Reggae music. This artiste has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 13 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 14 years.

Anthony B's musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark's Town, Trelawney. In this part of rural Jamaica, Anthony B was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his soon-to-be signature vocals. In his formative years, the artiste also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.

In 1992, Anthony B left his home-town and set out to make his fateful mark on Kingston's music scene. He rebuked the trend of girl and gun lyrics popular at that time and remained faithful to words of spiritual consciousness and social conviction. He started working with singer Little Devon, who introduced him to Richard "Bell" Bello, of Star Trail Records, producer for Garnet Silk and Everton Blender. Bell saw the talent of the youngster and shared his commitment to conscious music. The partnership produced a slew of records and releases, such as "Repentance time", "Fire pon Rome", "One Thing", "A De Man", "Rumour" and "Raid di Barn". Anthony B followed up with critically acclaimed albums such as "Real Revolutionary", "Universal Struggle", "7 Seals", "Black Star" and "Untouchable". He also struck out on his own to start his own label, Born Fire Records in 2002. He produced 3 albums independently; Street Knowledge, That's Life and Life over Death. In addition he released two collaboration albums "Too Strong" with Sizzla and "Three Wise Men" with Sizzla and Luciano.

Anthony B's latest hit singles include "Sleeping in the Rain", "Satisfaction", "Bad From Long Time", and "Teaser" and come from his highly-anticipated 13th album, "Life Over Death". In January 2009, Anthony is set to release yet another album with Greensleeves Records. The album, "Rise" produced by Frenchy Maximum Sound, continues Anthony's legacy as he proves himself to be one of Reggae's most prolific and engaging artistes, an electrifying performer whose music grips the public social conscience.

Baby Cham

No stranger to Guyana Cham born Damian Beckett on February 24, 1977 is a Grammy Award-nominated Jamaican recording artist, most well known for his 2006 single "Ghetto Story" from his major label debut album of the same name, a song which led to multiple "story" songs by other artists in a similar vein.

He is currently signed to Atlantic Records, and was previously known as Baby Cham, until 2005. He is still called "Baby Cham" by his Jamaican fans and fans from around the world.

The Miami New Times referred to Cham's 2000 debut album Wow...The Story as "the most anticipated album in years from any reggae artist," and a Washington Post review of a live Cham concert in 2006 described him as "the man who may be the next Sean Paul a dancehall artist who crosses over to the U.S. hip-hop market."

Throughout his career, Cham has collaborated with many hip-hop and R&B artists such as Foxy Brown, Alicia Keys, Carl Thomas, Shawn Mims, Akon, and T-Pain.

A look at some of the ‘Mash Day’ preparations, with only days to go!

Mash camps tour presents impressive costumes

With nine days to go before persons adorn themselves with costumes or joining the revellery to celebrate Mashramani 2010 designers and their teams are working overtime showcases Guyana in various creative forms and colourfully so.

A Mash Secretariat team headed by Culture Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, his Permanente Secretary Alfred King and Mash coordinator Lenox Canterbury visited five mash camps in the capital city and have all expressed satisfaction with what they have seen. The minister said that to date 31 companies, groups and regions have already signed on while he is optimistic that at least nine more companies will sign up for the mash day float parade to reach the 40 bands aim.

Digicel almost ready for the road

The team’s first stop was the Digicel camp in the company’s paring lot where costume designers were busying themselves with final touches to the individual creations such as a giant size hibiscus flower, the mammoth honey Bee and the wings of the Humming bird. Contracted designer Olympia Sunnaram reported that all the full costumes numbering more than 100 are completed and that the main focus at present is on the completion of the large individuals from each section.

“Our work is 98 percent complete so by Sunday the Digicel camp will be ready for the road,” a beaming Sonoram reported.

Obviously impressed and pleased with the quality of work and the finish as well as the pace at which the costumes were completed Digicel’s head of Marketing Jacqueline James said that “all our costumes were free and they are all gone so look out for us on the road because we will be out to win all the prizes”.

James also said that the company’s mash fit work out programme being executed by the Curtis workout team will be hitting the road with many surprises in formations and coordinated dances etc.

As the minister’s team viewed the costumes and hard of the concepts words such as impressive, commendable, creative and a great encouragement were used to describe the costumes and the rate of construction as well as the themes that will take to the road on February 23 as Guyana celebrates it’s 40 Republic anniversary.

The next stop was the Ansa Mcal’s Carib beer mash camp on Robb Street which is also being headed by Sonoram. There camp workers were busy cutting cardboard head pieces as ell as pasting and shaping other materials to create a sea of mostly yellow and blue costumes accentuated by sequins and Guyana flags as well as Carib signatures.

There again Sunnoram placed the work at being almost 95 percent completed. “The costumes are all done and most of the head pieces so we are finishing off some others and are also working to complete the bigger individual pieces. Those should be done by Tuesday or Wednesday in time for the Mash night showcase on February 22,” Sonoram said.

That camp also features some blasting soca music from the Stereo Sonics sounds spun by DJ Bevaughn and as at last night, the mash camp soca partying and hang out got started. The costumes are being constructed under the theme that focuses on promoting low carbon development and climate change with golden rays of the sun that offers hope on the horizon according to Sonoram. All told the Carib camp will be creating a yellow and blue sea numbering more than 200 strong in full costumes.

Minister Jennifer West ford designs PSM costumes
The Public Service Ministry as at yesterday was a cut above the rest when the Mash committee team visited and Minister Jennifer Westford is wearing the costumes designers’ cap. Her Ministry is the first to show case its costumes and will be making it debut in the costumes float parade with an individual queen and 50 revellers.

The theme focuses on ensuring government’s focus on development of its human resources in the various sectors be it medical, Engineering or agriculture. There is also a special section for electricity with helmets that light up and the Minister said the concept is hers and with the help of her staff her costumes constructions were cost effective and made of materials bought locally at some unbelievable prices. “I decided to do this because most of the designers prices are exorbitant so I decided to do it myself and you wouldn’t believe how cheaper its is,” the proud Minister turn costume designer said.

The mash camp visits ended with the official launch of the Banks DIH 500 strong mash band which will be coming 500 strong.

A Mash Secretariat team headed by Culture Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, his Permanente Secretary Alfred King and Mash coordinator Lenox Canterbury visited five mash camps in the capital city and have all expressed satisfaction with what they have seen. German Pop Star charged for allegedly spreading HIV!

German pop star, Nadja Benaissa, has been charged with 'causing bodily harm' after one of her former lovers tested positive for HIV.

Last year Nadja was arrested and jailed after it was discovered she had had unprotected sex with three men without disclosing her HIV positive status. At the time her lawyer argued she should "enjoy the presumption of innocence" because there was no proof she had passed the virus to any of her lovers, and Nadja was released after ten days in jail.

Fast forward: One of her lovers has since been tested HIV positive and now Nadja has been formally charged.

A spokesperson for the prosecutor says, "She was well aware that any unprotected sexual contact can lead to the virus being passed on."

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

When will people get smart on, you have to assume everyone has HIV. Always use a condom.

Saf-ER sex you can't go wrong.

Jay-Z disses "We Are The World" remake, but appreciate it's efforts.

In the effort to provide Haiti with relief, the U.S. has been trying to do its part to provide support to those in dire need within the country.

Coming together to remake the classic “We Are The World”, Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie pulled together a slew of artists to remake the magic first created with the help of the late Michael Jackson.

Of those to appear on the guest list, Jay-Z actually pulled a disappearing act as the rapper was nowhere to be found in the fray of the Hip Hop community.

Speaking with MTV, Jay gave the reasoning behind not being part of the song.

“I have a interesting take on that. I know everybody is gonna take this wrong: “We Are the World,” I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think “We Are the World” is like “Thriller” to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched.”

Although he may not agree with the song, he is thankful for what it has done to further aid Haiti and raised funds.

“I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts. Like 1 out of 2 Americans donated through text to Haiti. That's amazing. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but “We are the World” is untouchable like “Thriller” is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable.”

If he had things his way, Jay would have preferred that the song be something original, somewhat like “Stranded” with him, and Bono of U2.

Most would probably agree with Hov in applauding the effort, but some things just shouldn't be touched. Who would have ever thought to see Auto Tune on “We Are The World”?

Gaza fans take note: ‘Pon Di Gaza’ 2.0 will be in stores on the 26th of Feb.

PON_DI_GAZA_-_Cd_cover On February 26th, his recording label Adidjahiem Records, in partnership with notable Reggae label Tads Record, will release Pon Di Gaza 2.0, a re-release of last year's digital Pon Di Gaza album, with a bonus disc of the deejay's latest hit singles, include the current #1 hit "Life We Living." Pon Di Gaza 2.0 is Vybz Kartel's first physical album in nearly four years.

Like Pon Di Gaza, the release of Pon Di Gaza 2.0 comes in the midst of a storm of Kartel controversy -- rumors and allegations of everything from trouble inside his Portmore Empire camp to tangles with law enforcement -- which is all par for the course for the unconquerable deejay.

Maybe all the fame is getting to Mr. ‘Flash and Film it’. He has been absent from several concerts in several countries including Guyana, where only a handful of his entourage and members of the Portmore Empire were absent.

The deejay scored eight #1 singles in 2009, including the internationally acclaimed single "Romping Shop" which hit the Billboard Top 100, and "Dollar Sign," and "Virginity" which are currently in rotation on urban music stations throughout the Caribbean and North America. Since the start of 2010, he has been heralded as Deejay of the Year, Recording Artist of the Year, and Song Writer/Lyricist of the Year by the Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards, and Favorite Artist of the Year and Best Male Artist of the Year, while his song "Love Dem" was voted Best Chart Topping Song of the Year at the Youth View Awards in Jamaica.

Dr. Dre Suing Death Row Records.

With all that's going on in the music industry today we're not surprise by this news,

Dr. Dre just filed a lawsuit against Death Row Records claiming he hasn't received royalties from hip hop classic 'The Chronic' in over 14 years!

Wondering why he didn't file this suit 13 years ago? Could it be that Death Row Records has new owners and that if he'd filed while Suge Knight was still at the helm he'd have found himself hanging over a balcony by his feet?

I vote yes. Good luck with that Dre!

SMDH...Arab Ambassador Marries & Divorce All In One Hour...Bride’s Veil Was Hiding A FugFace!!

GSB.com came across this interesting bit of info this is one big mess by it self right here, we don't know if we should laugh or feel sad about this one.

An Arab ambassador called for an instant divorce after discovering his veil-wearing fiancée had a beard and was cross-eyed.

The would-be bride had hidden her face behind a Muslim niqab throughout their short courtship, meaning the diplomat had no idea what she looked like.

But as soon as the marriage was contract was signed in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, he tried to kiss her, before coming face-to-face with her hairy face and strange squint.

‘He was absolutely horrified,’ said a wedding guest.

‘The bride had a nice personality, but there was a good reason why she was hiding her looks behind a veil.

‘A divorce was inevitable, and the groom went straight to court leaving his new bride in floods of tears.’

The unnamed ambassador, who is in his 40s and has worked all over the world, including in Paris, told an Islamic Sharia court that he was tricked into the arranged marriage, Dubai’s official government newspaper reported.

He claimed the woman’s parents sent his own mother and and father pictures of her far more attractive sister.

A legal source said: ‘Every time the couple met, the bride would do her best hide her entire face.

‘The woman, who is a physician, was very keen to marry him, as she had had very few suitors, even though she’s well into her 30s.’

This is why we would suggest knowing the person well before you make these decisions...

SMH...who should we feel sorry for ?

Jory Completes Photo Shoot for Album + Talks on his MixTape

‘Ah de real thing’ may soon be ringing out on radio in dance halls and homes nationwide as Jory gears to release his first mix-tape at the Mash weekend. His adviser Kerwin Bollers of Hits and Jams said the quiet but talented sing-jay will give another side of his persona lyrically and through some professionally snapped photos out of the Aubrey Photo Studios.

This publication has happened upon some of the unedited versions of the photographs and we hasten to say that it borders on gruesome as it depicts the reality that Guyanese musicians are forced to endure.

He spends most of his days fighting fires but one can but imagine the imagery created that sees him spiting lyrical fire by the Sophia kid who knows how to hype up any party scene in or out doors. Taking his career to another level Jory recently joined forces with entertainer Kerwin Bollers and his fans can look out for the release of his first mixed tape.

Jory said “My tape will feature me free-styling on some of the hottest dancehall, hip hop, reggae and pop tracks that showcase Jory the singer/ entertainer singing about life and reality”.

Titled ‘say what me want fuh say’ the recordings were done with insight from entertainer Kerwin Bollers who has to some degree taken on Jory’s management. “This is part of an arrangement we made to better my chances of becoming a more marketable artiste while taking local entertainment to the next level”, Jory said.

Jory Hector, age 26 is a professional fireman and says he has already completed all of the songs for the free style tape and is again reiterating the need for persons to buy the original versions. “Its mainly a free style mixed tape where I don’t sit and write I just let the lyrics flow sharing my thoughts on real life stories that basically say what I want to say,” Jory Said.

Being a Guyanese artiste with big dreams to one day make the big time, this release to him, will hopefully be his breakthrough to the main stream of the Caribbean music scene.

Jory’s most recent live performance saw him getting even more forward than Jamaican sensations Charlie Black and Mad Dog at eth national park as part of the Hits and Jams Mash Crank Up show.

On Christmas night 2009 he performed at the National Stadium as the main opening act for Busy Signal and created quite the hype that by far out weighted any response received by local acts at an international show.

He has performed at almost every major venue in Guyana to rave reviews and several years ago as part of Natural Black’s birthday celebrations, he also sang in Jamaica as a member of the Brutal Jammers band to celebratory applauses.

“It was as if I were their own and looking back to me I have come to realize that after performing as an opening act for many international shows that featured stars like Busy Signal, Natural Black, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Peetah Morgan, Vegas and other I believe that I have the hype just like them and so I’m basically trying out my wings to see how far I can fly this year with the help of entertainer Kerwin Bollers”, Jory said.
As he launches into his new ideas and new affiliations for 2010 he is advising his fans to “Look out for ‘say what I want to say’ mix tape coming soon and other singles will follow.” Amidst rumors that might fly because of his new business affiliation he said “No me and Brutal tracks have no beef but I’m just doing my thing differently this year”.

Of the local music industry he reiterates that there is need for more unity in the industry “…we need to work together for the sake of the industry”. He added that artistes need to move away from cliques and people who seek to cause friction so they can record at any studio.

He further said that artistes need to start respecting the elders who continue to fight for the development of the industry. Some of his past hits are Jory, last bad boy, and of recent Mr. Limpy and the contagious ‘Limpy Dip’ that introduces a new dance style.

Can You Act ???.....Then Merundoi Needs You.

Merundoi needs Street theatre actors

The popular radio serial drama, Merundoi, that teaches ‘choice and change’ and focuses on ‘Life’s realities’ is currently auditioning for actors for its Street theatre programme at its head office.

Persons are trained on a yearly basis to do deliver forum theatre: as a form of interactive theatre where trained actors deliver messages in drama and interact directly with the audience.

Merundoi senior Reinforcement Officer, Durwin Humphrey, said the street theatre company does nationwide tours, delivering various messages. However while Merundo the radio serial drama focuses mainly on HIV/Aids related messages the street theatre focuses on other social and health related issues.

The audition is a prelude to the third workshop that starts from next Tuesday and will conclude on January 11. Humphrey said the on going auditions are open to persons age 18-40 and will conclude on Monday. “We are looking for twenty who will become a permanent part of the Merundoi Street Theatre Company. Once selected and trained they will be travel opportunities across Guyana”.

Explaining why the need for street theatre company Humphrey said based on research the Merundoi NGO has found that street theatre is a unique vehicle for delivering behaviour change intervention.

He added that the forum theatre allows persons to examine their personal issues that might be social or health related through dramatisation of actors who offer possible solutions without that person actually having to share their story. It’s another form of therapy that serves to facilitate the development of life skills and choices.

Since training began in November 2008 to date 45 persons have been trained in street theatre and they are actively involved in detaining Guyanese communities.

“The effort to train is aimed at expanding the company to offer more opportunities to tackle the many social and health related issues that are affecting the Guyanese populace,” Humphrey said.

The contagious Merundoi has become a talking point that can be heard on radios, in offices and even on the street is focussed on the environment, social and other health issues.

Merundoi, with popular stage personality, Margaret Lawrence, has completed more than 300 episodes and has been on the air since October 16, 2006.

Just over a year ago Merundoi evolved from being a project into being a registered NGO.

Interested persons can contact the Merundoi office on telephone: 227-4989 or 227-6937 and ask for Durwin."

Tennisia De Freitas Cops Junior Calypso Monarch Crown for 2010.

From a line up of 13 contestants Kuru Kururu resident Tennisia DeFreitas age 18 of the Kross Kolor Records Studios copped the Junior Calypso monarchy on(Saturday) at the National Cultural Centre.

Donning a maternity dress and mimicking the attitudes of a pregnant woman hers was an emotion stirring rendition of a baby giving reasons why it did not want to come into the world.

Skilfully penned by veteran musician Burchmoore Simon, the song tackled real local issues affecting and influencing the nation’s youth. Its hook was contagious and Defreitus’ delivery as ‘a sixteen-year- old single parent with child’ was superb. As she sang “I don’t want to be born” many eyes in the audience welled up while others shed tears as did the performer.

The song spoke of a sense of despair of the numbers who graduate from UG only to find no jobs at the other end there are many dropouts who simply lime on the road.
