Artiste Feature: ‘G-Money Federation’… in pursuit of a musical dream.

Music has been part of families for many generations and the story is no different for local group G-money. Music began for this group through motivation from their mom Pamilla Gittens, a musician and her sons were born with the genes too. But they also got started out of their love for music. Originally started in 2005 with brothers Jamal and Levar Gittens aka Clean steel and De general the group soon expanded to include good friends Jamael Williams aka So-rath, Marvin Dodson aka Dappa Dogg, and Claybert Allen aka time-x. After brain storming they decided to be called G-Money meaning Guy-fusion and while they see money as a universal grammar they thought G-Money Federation would work as a suitable name. Their sub group is Money nation and they have since added a new artiste named Devine

The group said their public support has been mixed but their passion for music has kept them going. “As a group we try to implement a Guyanese style in our songs so even though it’s rap it still has that Guyanese feeling to it with the international sound”, they all agree.

Speaking to us they said they do not have any plans for an album just yet as they already have one out titled “Money Grammar”. It did not have a major launch as a result of circumstances beyond their control but the album is available at Giftland and cyber technology or from any member of the group.

When asked what makes the group special the group paused for a moment laughed and said “it’s too special to share…if we’re to share it; it wouldn’t be special anymore.

“It is moving forward yes but better can be done and we believe artist in Guyana should co-operate more in order to get it to the place where it needs to be”.  They believe that local DJ’s need to play more Guyanese music as overall their belief is that if Guyanese music is to be headed anywhere it definitely needs more airtime.

When asked why they choose to record and release their music in Guyana they said they needed to start somewhere and being patriotic they decided the best place to start would be right here in their quest to put a Guyanese sound on the international music map. “We wouldn’t say it’s for money making cause honestly music is not a money making thing in Guyana.”

Though they often put their heads together to write their lyrics they admitted that its sometimes is an individual effort and they made it clear that “we’re not restricted to any one genres we do all type of music.”

“We are also influenced by what’s going on in the country and we also do songs based on the time of year and season.”

Their immediate career goal is focused on hitting the international arena within the next 3-4 yrs and they believe that their music style is what will get them airtime internationally eventually.

They let up that their songs have been well received by radio stations in Tortola, Jamaica and Barbados  especially the song  ‘Flash Light’ which was done for the Carib Soca monarch. After its release here in Guyana it had gotten favourable airtime on Bajan radio.

Though many do not know the G- Money federation they have performed at many events but they will always remember when they sang ‘Aids in Society’ at the National Park for one of the National Aids awareness concerts.

Like most artistes locally they lack the financial backing but are determined to persevere and they collectively pool their resources to make it happen for their dream as they don’t have a manager.

They get some amount of funds from their ‘Talent Express’ which has been on air for the pass 3yrs and counting on HBTV channel 9.

That show is open to all age range and races once you have good talent you’re welcome. One of the group’s members is currently in the USA pursuing higher education.
