Carlene For the past 11 years Jamaican singer/songwriter and producer Carlene Davis, whose stellar career spans four decades and includes several chart topping hits, has exclusively used her wealth of musical gifts to instruct in the way of the Lord. On her VP Records debut CD, TRUE WORSHIP, which will be released on October 6, Carlene demonstrates that creating great reggae music does not preclude spreading the gospel of Christ but rather, the two actions work synergistically as part of a Divinely ordained plan. Later this year, the BEST OF GLORY – CARLENE DAVIS , which features her greatest hits over the last decade is slated for release on VP/Glory Music on November 10.

True Worship is co-produced by Carlene and and her husband Tommy Cowan, and recorded live at Kingston’s legendary Tuff Gong studios. The album offers 13 songs of praise ranging from traditional hymns to original tunes penned by the Cowans. From the gently acoustic “Healing Is The Children’s Bread” (written by Tommy’s daughter, Pastor Sara Conner) to the rousing spiritual “Handful of Salt”, featuring backing vocals by the iconic Jamaican gospel group The Grace Thrillers, Carlene’s inspiring expression is complemented by several of the island’s finest musicians including (Shaggy’s) guitarist Michael Fletcher, keyboardists Neville Hinds, the musical director of Byron Lee’s Dragonaires, Chris McDonald, Othniel Lewis and renowned drummer Desi Jones. “God has given us reggae and whenever He hears that sound He says yes that is my Jamaican people,” explains Carlene who is also an ordained Christian minister with a PhD in pastoral counseling from South Florida’s Trinity Theological Seminary and a graduate of Orlando’s Ron Kenoly Praise Academy.

Born in Colonel’s Ridge, Clarendon, Jamaica, Carlene Davis was raised by her grandparents who instilled the importance of Christ in her life from an early age. She would rise to prominence within Jamaican music’s secular realm with her massive 1982 country-tinged reggae version of Paul Kelly’s “Stealing Love on the Side”. A spate of hits followed throughout the 80s and 90s including a cover of ABBA’s “The Way Old Friends Do”,Going Down to Paradise” ‘It Must Be Love”, ‘With You”, ‘The First Word In Memory”, “Winnie Mandela” released in 1990 as a tribute to the first lady of the South African resistance against Apartheid and the 1992 dancehall chart topper ‘Dial My Number”. It was Carlene’s breast cancer diagnosis in 1996 that brought her fully to Christ and provided her the requisite spiritual strength to deal with such a challenging affliction.

True Worship reconfirms the curative power of God’s love, Carlene Davis is, playing a significant role in uniting the world through the gospel and music.
